Everything That Happens In Delta Rune Is Fake
Have you ever seen the movie Coraline? In this movie the protagonist visits another reality that SEEMS to be better. But then she slowly realizes that this whole world is not only fake but also very cursed and messed up.
This is how I've felt playing Delta Rune, or at least its ending.
When it was trying to be it's own thing it was great. I liked the new characters and new story, new battle system, new enemies, new places - everything that was new was great.
But then the adventure is over and we get to go through town and talk with the Undertale characters we know and love. Or at least we think it's them but they are all acting out of character and nothing adds up.
Here's a list of things that expose the fakeness of this world (forgive me if I forgot about something or messed some facts up - I finished playing this after 2am and I couldn't sleep after that so nothing that happened there feels real to me anyway):
Asriel is alive and well and in college.
Undyne doesn't wear an eyepatch and doesn't seem to know who Alphys is.
Alphys seems to be crushing on Asgore, confirming that Undyne and Alphys aren't together, and it wasn't just Undyne fucking with us.
Bratty and Catty hate each other and they both flirted with Asriel at some point. (???)
Burgerpants seems to be crushing on Undyne?? Or did I fever dream that one?
Sans is new in town and he "befriended" Toriel last night while Papyrus stays in home because he doesn't have any friends and I know the skeleton fuckers are delighted by that information but based on what Toby told us about Sans, THIS IS VERY OUT OF CHARACTER FOR BOTH OF THEM and that's just not the skelebros that I know and love.
Mettaton (i think that was him) doesn't leave the house which is... I guess legal but strange for him. We don't even see him.
Gerson and Shyren are dead? Or was this a fever dream as well?? (edit: not Shyren, ShyRA)
Toriel and Asgore are our parents but they live in separation for some reason even though Asriel is alive. What happened between them?
Our protagonist is named Kris and Frisk is nowhere to be around.
Kris was revealed to be Chara...? Is... is that a thing that happened? Am I getting this right?
The point is - this whole segment feels like some kind of cursed AU. The alternative timeline where nothing adds up and everyone acts out of character. A fanfic written by a person who decided to ignore the canon and write their own version. Dare I even say... a fanfic written by a person who doesn’t like lgbtq+ representation in media?
Listen. I don't believe Toby Fox (the man who made a game in which you have to get two girls together to get the true ending) would just create an AU in which Undyne and Alphys don't even know each other. No, he wouldn't do that... without a purpose. The purpose was to scare us. To give us the halloween story. And let me tell you, straight Sans? That spooked me real good.
So please, by all means - do NOT confuse Undertale canon with Delta Rune canon. Those two games have NOTHING to do with each other.

Your parents are very careful about the family image.
It’s something that’s been hammered into your and your older siblings' brains since you were all very young. Keep your mouth shut, never cause a scene, never antagonize who you shouldn’t antagonize (read: anyone who is of use). All these rules only really boil down to “never stir up trouble for the Asagao Group”.
At first, you hated their—you say ‘their’ but really, your father’s—obsession with the family reputation. You never liked being in the spotlight, under everyone’s scrutinizing eyes.
But now, you’ve never been more grateful for the times your older brother helped keep you in line and taught you self-discipline.
Because if he hadn’t, you probably would have bitch slapped Suna Rintarou after the second time he tripped you this very lovely afternoon.
You were right! He is an absolutely rotten, annoying, infuriating little brat! Granted, you mentioning his girlfriend (ex-girlfriend) yesterday was kind of uncalled for and you didn’t have to say anything at all, seeing as the wound would still be fresh—
Who are you kidding, what wound?! He and his girlfriend only dated for two weeks and the fact that he's so salty about it makes no sense!
It's absolutely VEXING!
You can't count how many times he's tripped you, or accidentally hit your disposable camera with a volleyball, or even done the most mundane but irritating things like randomly scaring you by blowing into your ear. And every time he messes with you, he immediately turns to glance around and raises an eyebrow as if he was expecting something harsher than a "stop doing that" from the captain.
The damn asshole even flicked your forehead when you walked by and did it again for some reason!
What is even his problem?
You shake your head, choosing to just channel your frustration by flipping through the draft posters. “Do we have the photos for the wing spikers, setters, middle blockers, and captain and vice captain?” You ask Nana and Ryuji. The three of you are double-checking your pictures, the shoot having just finished and the team now in the showers.
“We also have shots of Aran-san by himself as the ace.” Ryuji tells you, placing the last of the disposable cameras inside Nana’s camera bag.
“That’s good, we just need ta process the film and then edit the photos digitally.” Nana turns to you, hands on her hips. “Now, should we threaten Suna or should we look for potential blackmail?”
“Blackmail takes more effort so maybe threatening him would be—excuse me, what?!” You shriek. Nana and Ryuji are staring up at the ceiling, hands on their chins, as they are still brainstorming. “NO! None of that!"
Ryuji frowns at you, tilting your head. “Ya always said beating someone up willy nilly won’t do anything so a new approach should be used.”
Arms flailing in front of you in panic, you say, “I didn’t say that second part! I never said that! Where did I insinuate that?!” These two might give you a heart attack one day. No, they’ll definitely make you go into goddamn cardiac arrest! Sure, Suna’s been a little shit to you all afternoon but…
“So ya expect us ta just stand around while that Mr. Bean lookin’ ass messes with ya?!” Nana asks you, hands on her hips as she looks up at you sternly; eyebrows knitted together and lips pursed. “Senpai, I’m tired of seein’ people disrespect ya! That video of ya scolding Suna and those Miya twins already blew up and people are taking it outta context…” Nana stomps her feet, crossing her arms. She’s upset, looks almost close to crying, drastically different from her usually irritated tantrums.
Ah yeah, that video. It wasn’t uploaded by either Suna or that other girl; the video was uploaded by an entirely different bystander and it just showed you scolding, well, everyone you had chastised yesterday. The video is just two minutes long but it managed to go viral throughout the student body anyway, with some students calling you ice cold and criticizing you for bringing up Suna and Erika’s then unknown breakup.
No, you didn’t spend ten entire minutes going through the comments.
“Ah, wait, Nana, please don’t cry—”
You’re interrupted by a slight sob to your right. “The comments are really nasty…” Ryuji adds and you turn to see that he is ALSO upset and close to crying.
“You too?!”
A sigh escapes your lips and you loop your arms through each of their own, so that they’re standing on either side of you and you’re in between them. Nana and Ryuji look up and down at you respectively in confusion. “I appreciate ya guys havin’ my back but I am fine, honest.” You say, looking at each of them with a small frown. “Tell y’all what, I’ll buy ya both fried chicken from our favorite restaurant ta calm both of yer butts. Just, no threatening of any kind please…”
Nana and Ryuji frown at you, glancing at each other as if debating what to do. Soon, Nana sighs, hugging your arm with a pout. “I don’t like their spicy chicken.”
“I like their spicy chicken.” Ryuji retorts.
“We’ll buy both the spicy and non-spicy chicken, please don’t bicker with each other.”
Nana pouts once more, glancing at Ryuji once again. The maroon haired boy glances back at her, silently coming to an agreement.
“Hmm, maybe we should get the photos developed on the way while we’re at it—” You say out loud, too busy thinking to notice Nana and Ryuji’s exchange, when you hear someone call out to you.
Kita emerges from the locker room with the rest of the team behind him, all grouped up in their own smaller cliques. “Ah, Kita!” You say as he approaches, while Nana and Ryuji are blinking in curiosity. You watch him tell Aran and the other third years to go ahead, glancing behind him to see the other members walking towards the exit.
“I have something else to discuss with ya, if ya don’t mind.” Kita says, nodding towards Nana and Ryuji.
“Oh, well, uhm…” You stutter, glancing at the two with uncertainty.
Nana groans. “We can just go tomorrow after school.” She says to you, shoving her hands in her pockets. Ryuji nods beside her.
“We’ll have the photos developed, don’t worry. See ya tomorrow!” He adds.
“Thanks. See ya tomorrow!” You say to them, waving as you watch them walk away, and you turn to look at Kita again, playing with your fingers. The rest of the team finally left, leaving only you and Kita standing outside the gym. “So, what did ya wanna talk about?”
A few minutes earlier…
Suna's plan was very simple.
He just needed to decipher what exactly is the relationship between you and Kita.
However, no matter how many times he messed with you, Kita didn’t even flinch! Their captain only chastised him before he asked if you were okay. And you don’t even react either! Not even a blush or any flustered stuttering. He could have just waited to see how you and Kita interacted with each other. Nothing really ever escapes his observant eye; a hand tucking hair behind your ear, an arm around your waist for a split second, even prolonged eye contact. But that took too long for his liking.
Heck! He’s not even looking for signs of you secretly dating anymore, he’s looking for ANY sort of relationship between you and Kita. Then again, he could mess with their captain to see how you’d react (since you’re probably a bit more expressive than he is) but he does not have a death wish.
He's failing his subjects but he's smart enough to not anger Kita!
"Ya know, Suna, ya don't hav'ta be so mean ta them." Ginjima pipes up next to the middle blocker, pulling off the top of his volleyball uniform. Currently, the entire team is changing back into their regular school uniforms, the photoshoot for the posters done for now.
The locker room is not such a great place to have a "little chat", what with all the body odor you'd expect from athletic teenage boys (showers have NO effect). Suna just wants to change and go home at this point too, his plan to get you and Kita to indirectly fess up proving to be futile. Alas, said plan just landed him a scolding from his teammates who are, honestly, confused.
"Yer normally pretty indifferent, Suna. What did the kid from the Asagao Group do to you?" Aran asks, looking at Suna with a slightly—more than slightly—baffled expression.
"Is Murasaki's senpai really that bad…?" Riseki cuts in, frown on his face and fingers on the buttons of his dress shirt. "I mean, I've ran into them a few times and they seem chill…"
“Nah, Suna’s just being a prick as usual.” Osamu reassures the first year, waving away Suna’s glare boring itself into the back of his skull. "Don't ya follow his example, yeah? Suna's a terrible role model."
"I don't even want to be a role model!"
"Aran-kun is a great example, Riseki, don't waste yer time with Mr. Bean here." Atsumu pipes in, rocketing Suna closer to the verge of an aneurysm, the latter now glaring holes in both their heads.
"Don't mention me in any of yer spats, Miyas, I can't have graying hair at 18!" Aran complains, turning red when Atsumu and Osamu begin to tease him (he really shouldn't have said anything in the first place then).
Suna glances at the space beside Aran and sees Kita silently fixing his uniform, tying his tie with expert precision. Mr. No Gaps Kita Shinsuke. If messing with you wasn't enough to get a reaction out of him, maybe that something between you two wasn't anything special. Which means, Mission Find Kita's Weakness is still ongoing (not aborted, obviously).
The middle blocker freezes when he realizes Kita's eyes are on him now. Maybe it's just him but somehow, the room just got way colder than it did before. Slowly, Kita glances at his back, then looks at Suna again with blank eyes. "Is there something on my back?"
Suna flinches, averting his gaze with poorly practiced nonchalance. "No, there isn't."
Kita doesn't say anything else, just turning back to his locker to continue getting ready.
….
Suna finally emerges from the locker room, safely tucking his phone back into his pocket securely lest he wants to lose it again. Dammit, everyone else left already but he told those one-braincell twins to wait for him while he fetched his phone, those little rats—
"So what did ya wanna talk about?"
Suna freezes and hides behind the wall by the open doors of the gym, back pressed to the cold painted cement as he strained his ears to eavesdrop on your conversation. Who are you talking to? With seemingly no one else around to overhear—?
"I think it’d be nice if we say ‘hey’ to each other, first? We didn’t get ta actually talk the whole time you were here."
Holy crap, is that Kita?
"Heh, sorry sorry, hey. We were just so busy all afternoon."
Did you just giggle?
He knows he could be seen if he takes a little peek but he just can't resist, bending just a little bit so that he can catch a glimpse from behind the wall. There stands you and Kita Shinsuke. Kita had his back slightly turned to the door, so Suna can’t really see his face clearly. But he can see you.
If he could, he would have taken a few HUNDRED shots purely of your face, which was as red as the ripest tomato in the, uh, tomato field or whatever they were called. “I know, thank ya again fer doing this, I know it could be a bother to ya—” Kita starts but you wave your hands frantically in front of you, a frown on your face.
“I-It’s really not! I did say that if it’s you, I wouldn’t mind favors!” You quickly reassure him. Suna raises his eyebrow at this. So you and Kita do talk to each other, you just don’t meet up where people could see you…
Oh, how hella suspicious.
Suna snaps out of his thoughts when he hears you speak again, his interest now more piqued than ever. “Ah, the first posters should be ready by next week, just to remind ya.” You say to Kita, idly crossing your arms. “That way, ya can tell us if ya want anything changed.”
"I'm sure anything ya come up with would be good." Suna sees Kita tilt his head, and judging by your expression, he probably has an endearing expression on his face.
However, Kita's posture deflates and Suna watches as your face falls. "About Suna…" Kita starts and immediately, Suna sees your face sour, eyebrows knitted together and a scowl on your face.
"Ya saw him! He's such a conniving little rat!" ('Conniving little rat?') "I don't think I can really work with someone so deadset on antagonizing me, Kita."
"I'll talk to him." Kita says. "If he doesn't fix his attitude…"
"Ya don't have to, it wasn't like he was gonna ask for my help anyway."
"Well, I'm not going to let him pick on my best friend like that."
Suna's eyebrows raise. Best friend? Just best friends? Well, that's disappointing. Suna thought he'd get some juicy info on your and Kita's secret forbidden relationship that you both cannot show to the school or the public. It would have given him something to tease their captain about AND something to hold over your head! Two birds with one stone! Now that stone is just thrown out the window.
The middle blocker silently clicks his tongue, about to just walk out the gym since this is just a waste of time, when he sees it. The way your body stiffens, your smile tightens, and you stop playing with your fingers. He sees a flash of something akin to disappointment show in your eyes.
Oh?
"Oh, I guess not. You'd never let anyone mess with your friends…" You're sheepish, a hand reaching up to scratch the back of your neck. Your gaze is downcast and Suna watches with rapt attention as you avert your gaze to and from different spots on the ground, avoiding Kita's stare.
Kita lifts his hand up and pats your head, your face burning red now. "Of course I wouldn't let it slide. I love ya too much ta let anyone pick on ya anymore." God, even Suna flinched at that. "You want me ta walk ya home? It's gettin' late."
"No, it's okay. Aran and the others are probably waitin' for ya."
"Then, I'll see ya tomorrow, okay? Get back home safe." With one last pat to your head, Kita walks on ahead, leaving you in front of the gym. You watch him go with a wave and as you slowly drop your hand, you visibly droop.
Suna slowly approaches you, hands in his pockets and blank expression on his face. You don't notice him, your hands over your face. "Kita, why are ya so dense…?"
"I know right, it was painful seeing the two of you skirt around each other." The sound of Suna's voice has you jumping in fright, swinging around to slap whoever snuck up on you in the face. The middle blocker catches your wrist before your palm could make contact with his cheek.
You actually seem shocked when you see that it's Suna, much to his amusement. You're always so cold and poker faced when he sees you that every wayward twitch of your eye or corner of your mouth would never fail to entertain him.
He glances at your wrist, then back at you, the corner of his mouth twitching upwards in a smirk. "Nice reflexes." He comments, his smirk now morphing into a shit-eating grin at the way your face burns bright red—not in embarrassment, but in anger.
"You little— what— I—!" You stutter over your words. Suna should really test how fast your brain would work after a brief interaction with Kita.
Suna smirks as he bends forward a little to be eye-level with you, and somehow, that feeds your ire even more. He could practically see the steam coming out of your ears. “Easy there, High and Mighty, if I knew you’re startled easily, I would have tapped your shoulder at least.” You both know he wouldn’t. “That was some conversation with Kita, wasn’t it?”
It takes you a few seconds of your brain buffering, but when you do register his words, your mouth drops open and your eyes widen a fraction. ‘You did not.’
Suna’s eyes narrow into something akin to a cat’s, his shit-eating grin returning but this time ten times worse than earlier. ‘Yes, I did.’
“You— ya eavesdropped—?!” You begin to say—shriek, is the correct description, wanting to lift your hands to strangle the living crap out of this foot-tripping, camera-breaking, goddamn-irritating son of a— “Will ya let go of my wrist?!”
“Nope, you’ll run away from me, High and Mighty.”
“Oh, who wouldn’t run away from an eavesdropping little creep— wh— hey! Don’t pull me— OI!”
With a firm tug, Suna pulls you along with him as he starts to walk away from the gym, face blank as he ignores your protests. This guy. This guy, seriously!
Tumblr media
Your eye twitches as you look across the table towards the object of your irritation, who’s taking his sweet, sweet time finishing a single ice pop while looking up and down your form at the same time. Of all places, he dragged you to a convenience store, conveniently a few blocks away from Inarizaki High School. There’s not a lot of people in the store. Not that it’s completely deserted, there’s a few part and full timers working behind the counter and in between the shelves, and there’s plenty of people walking around outside the store itself.
How should you say this; there are no other students from Inarizaki here. You noticed this the moment you and he sat down at the table and it puzzled you even more. What in the world is this guy…?
“Well? Aren’t you gonna eat that pork bun I bought you?” Suna goads, interrupting your thoughts. With narrowed eyes, your gaze slowly drops down to the single meat bun situated right in front of you. It’s freshly microwaved, you can still see the slight steam emanating from the white bun and into the colder than necessary air conditioning.
“I’m not hungry.” Is your simple answer, curt and to the point.
“It’s the second best convenience store pork buns in Hyogo.” Is Suna’s simple comeback, now empty ice pop plastic sandwiched between his teeth.
“Oh wow, thank you fer dragging me here and wasting my time ta buy me Hyogo’s second best pork buns.” Your voice is dripping with sarcasm and you don’t know if the obvious use of irony just simply flew over his head, but he seemed to revel in the exasperation of your tone.
You see a much older employee’s nostrils flare at your words and a younger one moves to restrain him in the corner of your eye, but you don’t pay them any attention. “What? Do cheap snacks bore you, High and Mighty? Want one wrapped in gold?” Suna asks you, removing the plastic from his teeth with a provoking smirk.
Think “relax” ten times. Think “relax” ten times.
“Ya know what? A meat bun wrapped in gold would have been worth all my wasted time.” You say with a faux smile before your face falls, your expression flat. “What’s yer damn problem, Suna?”
“I have a problem?” He has the gall to ask with a raised brow and a confused frown on his face as if he’s clueless. He also has the gall to actually laugh at your face, which probably looks like you’ve sucked an entire lemon and then some. “Don’t get so pissy, High and Mighty, I just wanted to ask you for something.”
“Then just ask me, instead of dragging me five blocks away from the bus I need ta take to get back home ta ask m—!”
“Be my tutor.”
“THANK YOU for finally getting to the point—what did you just say?”
Suna watches with a wide grin as your eyes widen to the point of being in danger of bulging out, your jaw dropped open for the second time today. This time, however, instead of being livid and scandalized, you only look beyond shocked. You blink once, twice (Suna can practically see the gears trying to turn in your head), before you squeeze your eyes shut as if you feel a headache coming on. “What.”
Suna lifts a finger and says, “Tutor. You. Me.”, as he points at you and then at himself as if he’s explaining the basic concept of colors to a toddler.
“I heard and understood what ya said, you as a concept are just hard to process!” You shriek at him, hitting your fists on the tabletop. “I mean, ya messed with me all afternoon for the HECK of it, it seems like. Then, ya eavesdrop on a private conversation that you had no business being a part of—”
“Well, I WAS the topic of that talk, now wasn’t I? And you did eavesdrop on me and Erika yesterday while we were 'breaking up'.”
“—you shut your mouth, AND, ya feel like ya can have the AUDACITY ta drag me here, at 6:51 PM on a school day, so ya can ask me ta be yer tutor—ya know what, even if someone BEGS me ta teach ya a single math formula, I will not help ya study or give a damn about it! I am not a tutor, alright?! And if you think I would help ya just because Kita asked me ta and I feel bad fer ya, you’ve got another thing comin’!”
Your tone shifts into something resembling the sound of nails against a chalkboard, borderline shrieking at Suna now after slamming your hands against the table. Suna just watches you go on your tirade, chin placed upon his palm and head tilted as he listens.
His other hand sneakily slips into his bag, and he rummages through it as you continue your rant, something along the lines of 'family rules be damned' and 'not even a threat of expulsion could get me ta help yer sorry ass', he's not really sure. "And another thing—!" You start, ready to begin another long tangent of your rant, when Suna pulls out a book from his bag and places it on the table with a deadpan expression.
Eyes narrowed, you eye Suna in suspicion, crossing your arms. "What's that."
Suna, in all his sleepy glory, smirks at you and says nothing; letting you peer down at the cover of the book. Immediately, you notice the pink. After the pink, you notice the characters drawn on the cover. After the characters, you realize oh crap, that's your manga.
"I didn't take you for someone who likes romance. Or someone who's an otaku." Suna finally says, sifting through the pages of 'Love-Hate Relationship With My No-Good, Very Annoying Roommate' with a raised eyebrow. "Look, they're holding hands! How scandalous, I hope that wasn't a spoiler."
"Wh— wait, when did ya—?" You begin to ask but your brain goes back to yesterday to when you crashed into Suna running down the stairs. Because everything happened so fast, you failed to remember the fact that you dropped all your things and hurriedly put it back in your bag. The fact that the very real possibility (and now reality) of Suna Rintarou being the one who found your manga slipped your mind and you are very disappointed in yourself.
"Remember now?" Suna is very annoying when he wants to be. "You know, I was surprised when I saw that you read stuff like this. Not so prim and proper for someone like you. Though, nothing quite shocked me more than this."
Your jaw drops when Suna pulls out a photo from his pocket and you see that it's the photo of you and Kita you tucked between the pages of your manga. "Friends, huh? Childhood best friends, maybe? Though, it's curious why you'd put something like this in a romance shoujo manga."
"I couldn't put it anywhere else safely."
"Righhht, and you saying 'Kita, why are you so dense?'," he does an annoying imitation of your voice, "is just you being curious."
You're quite speechless and if Suna was elated at your expression earlier, the way your mouth opens and closes like a fish and your eyes dart from him to the photo to him again makes him manic. "You weren't slick about it or anything." He shrugs. "It was pretty obvious with how you talked and looked at him. I'm surprised someone could like Kita that way, if I'm being honest."
Suna bends forward to peer at your face better. Your reaction to the next thing he's going to say is something he needs to see. "But, judging from everything earlier, he doesn't feel the same way, now doesn't he?"
Oh, you look livid. Like the final nerve has been stepped on. Your face is now red from both embarrassment AND irritation, glaring daggers right through Suna. He continues before you can respond. "Maybe we should ask him. See what he thinks of you, shouldn't we?"
It's then that your eyes narrow and your stare becomes even more scathing. "Ah, I get it." Suna raises an eyebrow. "If I don't tutor ya, ya tell Kita and everyone else that I like him?" The thought of that makes you want to vomit (the whispers without it annoy you enough) but you can't let it show on your face.
"What? I would never." Suna doesn't sound genuine. "Annoy you endlessly with the fact that he doesn't reciprocate? Sure."
This guy seriously. You grit your teeth and close your eyes, biting the inside of your cheek. You've had someone try to get the upper hand on you and you outsmarted them before. You can do it again.
"Hmm… spreading rumors ain't my thing but," it's your turn to shrug, tucking a piece of your hair behind your ear and peering up at Suna with cold eyes, "if I said that yer a pervert who felt up my legs once while going up the stairs, that would raise some eyebrows, now wouldn't it?"
"Wha—and who would believe that?"
"I dunno, would ya like ta find out?" You give him a saccharine grin, eyes closed and head tilted. "Even if my reputation is shit, my words still hold a bit of influence, ya know?"
If Suna wants to play this game, then you'll play too.
The tension increases between the two of you as you and Suna stare at each other with challenging gazes, the air surrounding you growing even colder than the air conditioning of the convenience store. It's now your turn to revel in the way Suna's eyebrow twitches and his lips pull back in an annoyed frown.
There's also a small vein popping on his forehead that you almost find amusing until a loud sigh escapes his lips, making you wince and tense at the noise. His glare is gone almost instantly, replaced by a impassive glare as he leans back in his chair.
"Okay. What about a deal?"
You blink at his sudden change of attitude, immediately confused. "Huh?"
"Deal. Me. Yo—"
"Stop dumbing things down for me!"
"Let's make a deal." Suna crosses his arms and leans back further into his chair. "You help me pass midterms, I help you woo Kita."
You can't help but scoff at his proposal, mirroring his stance. "Help me woo Kita? Ya can't even keep a girlfriend for more than a week."
"At least I can get into a relationship without endlessly pining for them first." Suna says and you resist the urge to hit the middle blocker in the face with the meat bun in front of you. "It's a simple transaction. I receive good grades and no longer have the possibility of being benched, and you receive… Kita's love and affection or whatever."
The idea of outright rejecting the offer is so tempting to you right now. Why would you agree to spending a second longer with someone like Suna Rintarou? That's your reasoning.
However, the idea of accepting the offer is just as tempting to you right now.
Your feelings for Kita were a secret you kept close to your heart, and one you never plan on telling anyone else except for Kita himself. If you were to let go of an opportunity like this, you'd never forgive yourself.
"How exactly are ya gonna help me 'woo' Kita?" You ask dubiously, tilting your head.
"You call the shots. Help me help you and I'll help you help me." When he sees you raise an eyebrow, still doubtful, he sighs again and clasps his hands together, placing his elbows on the table. "What's stopping you from confessing to him? Does he have a girlfriend? Do his parents not like you? Do you not have experience—?"
"That's not the point!"
Suna pauses at your outburst, his eyes widening for the first time this entire exchange. Your face is red and your eyes are wide. It's almost like you're just as shocked at your own outburst as well. "Uhm. What. What I mean is. Is uhm."
Suna blinks a few times before it finally clicks in his mind and he gives you an infuriating lazy smirk. "Oh. Oh, I see. You've never had a boyfriend before." He says and the way your blush grows brighter is enough to tell him he has hit the nail on the head. "Holy shit, you really haven't!"
"I-It's not somethin' ta laugh about!" You retort, feebly trying to defend yourself but Suna lets out a slight laugh anyway, breathless with disbelief. "I'm serious!"
"I know you're serious, High and Mighty, but—this is gold, oh my god, I WISH I took a picture of that face." Suna says as he wipes an imaginary tear from his eye, irritating you even more if that was possible. "You need to be more assertive! No guy—not even Kita—is going to date you if you just stare at him longingly from a safe distance as his 'best friend'."
Suna pauses. "If I can even call you guys that, I barely even see you guys interact at school, so that's another -1." He leans forward again and jabs a finger at you. "If you want Kita to notice you, you have to make the first move."
You're silent for a few seconds, your eyes darting down to the floor as you wring your hands together, back hunched over. "I… I don't know how ta make the first move."
Your voice is soft, almost vulnerable; so much so that it makes Suna's brain freeze in its tracks.
"Or the move after that. Or the one after that. Or the one after that…" Your carefully constructed facade crumbled slowly. "I don't… know how to be in a relationship. So I don't think I would ever be a good girlfriend for Kita, if ever. So I never confessed."
Suna's eyes widen and you scowl at the flash in his eyes, averting your gaze. "Pity doesn't suit ya, Suna, so just— just forget about everything I said. Or laugh, it was pathetic."
He does neither, leaning forward instead. "Then how about we practice?" He suggests casually, tilting his head at you.
"What?!"
"Practice. Me. Yo—," you grab the meat bun in front of you and raise it, "OKAY, OKAY, I'LL STOP, PUT IT DOWN. What I'm saying is I'll help you practice making a move on Kita, and we'll keep that ball rolling." Suna looks up for a second to think. "I'll be… teaching you how to be a girlfriend in a sense. We'll essentially be tutoring each other."
You're hesitant but this just became a really good deal (to you, at least). Right now, someone who's been in relationships before is sitting right in front of you. Not the best source of experience, considering his romantic track record isn't the best, but at this point; you're desperate.
If practice goes well… you might actually be able to confess to Kita.
"I-If we're doing this, we hav'ta establish ground rules!" You turn, digging through your bag to pull out your pen and a piece of paper.
Suna deadpans at you. "Ground rules?"
You glare back at him. "Terms and conditions. You know, boundaries?" You clarify.
He rolls his eyes but shrugs in resignation nevertheless. "Okay, I can play along with that." At his words, you begin to write.
"Firstly, no one should know about this deal, especially Kita. If I found out ya tell anyone else about this, god forbid those Miya twins, yer dead to me." You say sternly and Suna raises his hands to placate you.
"I wouldn't."
"I'm serious."
"Yes, got it."
You roll your eyes and begin writing the next rule. "Secondly, no half-assing lessons. I'm not wasting my time on someone who won't take their studies seriously in the first place."
"Well, same goes for you. I'm not gonna help anyone who's going to back out in the end get into any relationship." Suna shoots back, giving you an unamused stare and you nod.
"Deal. Thirdly, no making fun of Kita OR me."
"What does that—?"
"Yer mean most of the time."
Suna shuts his mouth, averting his eyes, before nodding his head and closing his eyes. "Fair enough." He says and you smirk, continuing to write.
"Next, no kissing."
Suna raises an eyebrow at that. "Don't you want to learn how to be a bit intimate with Kita?"
"I just—I want my first kiss to be with Kita, as sappy as that sounds." You tuck a strand of your hair behind your ear, ignoring the way Suna judges you. "First kisses are magical to me, okay?!"
"I don't see the appeal." Suna deadpans.
"You mean yer first kiss wasn't anything like that?" You ask, tilting your head. "Not like, chu~ kyaa~, like that?"
Suna cringes at your description but he thinks back to his first kiss nonetheless. His first kiss… when was his first kiss? Last year—
(Ruby red nails dig into his skin. Pink lips on his, confiscating his ability to breathe. Chartreuse eyes that once felt like a dream felt suffocating, suffocating, suffocating—)
"Nope." Suna answers simply, nonchalant. "Just a quick peck, on the lips, and then it was done."
"How romantic. As romantic as a chalkboard."
"Moving on, what's next?"
You look down at the paper, tapping the end of your pen on your lips. "No falling in love." Your words cause Suna's eyebrows to shoot straight up, a frown decorating his face.
"Sorry, High and Mighty, you're not my type." You glare at him back.
"You ain't mine either. Yer the best one fer this because yer the least likely ta develop feelins' for someone like me anyway." You start to explain, serious. "However, developing feelings will jeopardize our deal, so it's better if we remind ourselves. The mere exposure effect is a real thing."
"If it's real, then why hasn't Kita fallen for you yet?" Maybe if you throw your bag in his face, he'll finally quit being such a pain in the ass. The glare you send him physically makes him flinch.
"Smart enough ta know the exposure effect but not smart enough ta not flunk, my god." You mumble under your breath, loud enough for Suna to hear. He glares at you at your words. "Okay, I think that's it. Let's sign it."
Suna begrudgingly takes the paper you hand him after you sign your name at the bottom of the paper, skimming over the contents with a nonchalant glare.
Operation Help You Help Me
Rule 1: Deal should be TOP SECRET (especially to the Miya twins)
Rule 2: No half-assing lessons.
Rule 3: No making fun of Kita, bitch
Rule 4: No kissing
Rule 5: No falling in love
If rules are broken, if Suna fails midterms, or if Kita graduates without confession,
deal is off.
The title at the top of the paper makes him snort with derision, much to your chagrin. "'Operation Help You Help Me'? Seriously?" It's a silly name to him, like that of a grand plan of the main cast in a kids' TV show.
"Yes, it's a stupid name. Maybe we should change it. What about 'Secret Friends Society'? Or maybe 'Shut the Hell Up and Deal With It'?" Your sarcasm is too heavy for Suna to pretend to ignore.
"Okay, fine, damn, you're so hard to please." Suna grumbles as he signs his name next to yours on the paper, handing it back to you. The saccharine smile that starts to form on your face is starting to annoy him.
"Hey. If ya didn't try ta blackmail me, I would have agreed to tutor ya." You mock, smirking at the now openly irritated Suna, who tries to keep a forced smile on his face.
Suna's eyebrow twitches. He leans forward and places his elbows on the table, a subtle sign that he's not backing down and he's certainly not in your debt. "Looking forward to working with you, High and Mighty."
Crossing your legs, you giving Suna a closed eyed, sweet smile, mirroring his position. Lifting the meat bun to your mouth, you grin. "Likewise, Suna Rintarou."
The start of a deal. The start of a contract that will last for as long as Kita is in school.
His yellowish gray eyes meet your own.
What will become of the two of you at the end of the year?
….
"Wow, these meat buns are good."
"And you doubted me earlier."

what are you doing, step bro? (sakusa x f. reader)
summary: To your parents, Sakusa was the greatest son. To you, he was the best big brother you could’ve ever asked for, but you could only find that out with a little force.
a/n: i literally just started college so i won't have much time to write but i have some stories in my drafts that'll be posted in awhile lol. should i open requests for haikyuu drabbles since they're short but still entertaining?? idek i feel like no one is reading this rn LOL but if anyone is reading this, lmk ;)
(edit: I HAD TO REPOST THIS CS IT WASNT SHOWING UP IN TAGS so sorry if you already liked this post)
warnings: 18+, incest, mentions of drugging,  mentions of somnophilia, mentions of parental neglect, noncon/dubcon/rape, sakusa is a dirty pervert i just don’t know how else to tag this, degradation, slight manipulation
"(Y/N), this is your new big brother, Kiyoomi," your mother said, holding tightly onto your small shoulders as you stood in front of her.
"You can refer to him as your nii-san from now on." Locking eyes with you was an older boy with long black wavy hair, two moles on the right side of his forehead, and a white face mask on the lower half of his face which blocked his nose and mouth. How odd, you thought. You could tell he was disinterested with how his eyes were blank as he stared at you.
That was the first time meeting your step brother, Sakusa Kiyoomi.
Being four years younger than Sakusa, you two never really got along. Of course you had to respect each other, but there was nothing to really talk about other than when his volleyball games were or unfulfilling small talks. Sometimes he would make snide remarks, asking if you even showered when your hair was only slightly messy or if a smart word ever came out of your mouth when you stumbled over your words. Sometimes he was just mean to you in general to the point where you would cry. You always tried to ignore it, though. That was when you were younger. You couldn’t help that you weren’t that smart and he was your nii-san after all. Your parents would brush it off.
You celebrated his victories together, only because you had to. I mean, you were the younger sister of one of the nation's top three aces in high school volleyball. There was no way your parents wouldn't celebrate. He was their pride and joy.
Smart, athletic, incredibly attractive — everything you felt like you could never live up to.
Your own biological mom so obviously and painfully liked him more than you.
Before you even entered high school, Sakusa was old enough to move out and go to college where he continued to play volleyball. When he visited during the holidays, you still wouldn't have decent conversations with him. He would still insult you. It even made you cringe when you had to call him nii-san. Why address him as your older brother when he didn't even act like it?
But you dealt with it because you had to.
Fresh out of Itachiyama Academy, you're focused on studying for entrance exams for colleges in your area rather than what would happen if you ever had to see Sakusa again. But, you were expecting to see him very soon.
Gentle knocks are heard from outside your door and before you can respond, your mom is already opening it.
"(Y/N), Omi is coming today and he's gonna be here for a week. I have to go to the grocery store to buy food and I'm gonna run other errands so it's gonna take awhile," she says, leaning her head into your room. You respond multiple times with "okay" so she can leave your room sooner.
Textbooks and notebooks are strewn across your bed with you on your stomach, trying to cram as much information in your head as possible.
"That means I might not be here in time for when he comes, so you have to open the door and greet him," she adds.
"What about dad?" you ask with a grimace. The most you would do is say hello and scurry back into your room.
She rolls her eyes at you. "He's working late again. You know that, (Y/N)." With a sigh, you agree and she finally leaves your room after bidding you a "goodbye."
You can't remember the last time you saw Sakusa, but it was probably almost half a year ago. Ever since he left for college, your parents were even more distant towards you. They probably felt like they didn't need to worry about you because you weren't doing anything important.
When Sakusa came over, he barely acknowledged you and you were okay with that because it meant he wouldn't be bothering you.
But that didn't mean his blank stare wouldn't catch your attention whenever you came out of your room to eat or use the restroom. The atmosphere felt...very odd around him. You couldn't necessarily come up with a reason why.
Suddenly, you hear knocking on the front door. It had to be at least an hour or two since your mom left and the thought of who was waiting at the door made your stomach churn.
"Nii-san is here," you mutter to yourself as you got up to open the door. Right as you open the door, Sakusa was staring down at you with the same blankness in his eyes from before with his usual face mask. His hair was shorter than you remember.
Mindlessly, his eyes seem to scan your body before returning to your face, making you feel self-conscious. You were only wearing black spandex shorts and a loose tank top. Subconsciously, you rub your arm and step back to make space.
"(Y/N)," Sakusa acknowledges you in a deadpan voice. It's no surprise to you.
"Hi, onii-san. How are you?" You try so hard to be polite, but Sakusa seemed to have a naturally dominant energy that overwhelmed your senses, even if he also seemed to have the personality of a jar of mayonnaise. You step aside so he can come in. He wore gray sweatpants and a black windbreaker that was zipped up all the way. As soon as he makes it inside, he removes his face mask, stuffs it in his pocket, and starts unzipping his jacket.
"I'm good," he hums, "Where's mom?" He places the backpack he was carrying on the couch and takes a seat as you close the door.
"She's out doing errands and dad is working. Do you want some tea?"
"Yes, please. Make sure you wash your hands before you do. Thank you," he said. You walk into the kitchen, muttering "germaphobe" under your breath at his extra request. Unbeknownst to you, he watched you from his place on the couch as you walked around the kitchen, pulling the tea kettle out of one of the bottom cabinets and looking for cups. His gaze followed the outline of your ass in those tiny shorts that hugged your bottom tightly.
"What college are you planning on going to, (Y/N)?"
"I'm not sure yet, but I'm applying to the college you're going to and three others," you replied from your spot near the counter.
Sakusa actually perks up at your answer. "Oh, cool. You'll love it there if you get in. Only if, though. You're not the brightest."
You couldn't help but let your face fall in a frown at his seemingly small comment. Quickly, you compose yourself and brush off his remark. You got the water boiling in the tea kettle and reached high for the teacups that were sitting on the top cabinets. Your stepdad definitely put them up there.
A presence looms close behind you, which makes your whole body automatically freeze and tense up. A veiny, bulky arm reaches up easily to grab the teacups while another one snakes around you to pull your tank top down as it was exposing your stomach. You're not sure if you're imagining it, but you definitely feel something stiff brushing up against your back.
"You need to be careful. Don't wanna hurt yourself, do you?" Sakusa commented, leaning forward so his mouth was right next to your ear. A blush found its way onto your cheeks from feeling him so close to you.
He usually hated being so close to people. What was so different today?
"R-right," you stuttered, "Thank you, nii-san."
Confrontation wasn't a strong trait of yours.
You guess that moment was when it started getting really weird between you two. You still had small talks from whenever he would actually see you come out of your room, but you wanted to avoid him as much as you could. However, that was hard when Sakusa insisted that you drank tea together every night and, of course, your parents insisted, too.
Your nii-san wants to spend more time with you, they would say excitedly. Better late than never!
Maybe if he was showing the slightest bit of interest in you, your parents would finally care about you. So, with much hesitation, you started drinking tea with your step brother every night. Sakusa even made the tea himself so his poor little sister wouldn't tire herself out with carrying that heavy teapot.
You're still not sure if you're imagining things, but the tea tasted different from how you made it. And you swear that the tea didn't make you so sleepy after drinking it until he started making it.
"Come here," Sakusa would say with a smirk, "Onii-san will take you to bed."
You would pass out before you even made it to bed, but every morning you woke up with sticky thighs, only blaming it on sweating while you were sleeping.
Until one day, you didn't drink all the tea that he made you. You still fell asleep, though. Your brain was hazy enough to make you lose consciousness as he helped you up from your seat in the kitchen.
Sakusa laid next to you on your bed. You were placed on your side so he could slide under the sheets right behind you to press his hardened length against your ass. This was his favorite part of the night. He spent a few minutes playing with your cunt to make it slick enough for him to let his cock break through your walls.
You barely stirred awake. Didn't even move an inch as he caressed every part of your body, from your soft nipples to the sensitive nub between your thighs.
He pushed the elastic of his sweatpants down to his thighs quickly. His cock hit your ass before settling between your folds. A satisfied moan leaves his lips when he feels your wetness coating the top part of his shaft as he rubbed it against you. He hooked his arm around one of your legs so that you were spread open enough for him to fuck you and rub your clit at the same time with his other hand.
He wanted that sweet nectar completely coating his dick. He remembers the way you tasted and how you came on his tongue the night before, despite being blacked out from the little pills he would dissolve in your drinks. You tasted so clean and smelled so fresh. It was impossible for your nii-san to control himself around you.
And when did your ass look so good? God...Sakusa couldn't believe he never noticed how cute and well-shaped you were. You weren't that little girl he met when you were both kids. You were pushing adulthood now. Still pathetic looking, still too shy, still small around him, but fuck, he definitely would have pushed you over the counter the first day he came over and fucked you until you were crying and gagging.
He continued rubbing circles onto your clit and letting his cock soak up your juices. Gently, he positions the tip at your entrances and pushes in slowly.
"There you go," he whispers in your ear, "I know it's a little big. Don't worry."
He manages to fill you up all the way, making him groan. Your walls were tight around him. He thrusts in and out of you carefully, salvaging the feeling of your slick interior.
But you didn't drink all the tea, which means that you could wake up earlier than he expected.
Sakusa didn't expect you to wake up now.
You stirred slightly as you regained consciousness. Although your eyelids were heavy, you tried to force them open only to be met with darkness.
"Mmm," you croaked, rubbing your eyes. The odd feeling of being filled up suddenly made you wake up more. "W-what's going on?"
"Fuck," Sakusa muttered from behind you. You felt a hard chest pressed against your back and...a hand on your pussy. No, something inside your pussy. And that voice was so familiar.
You quickly whip your head around when the realization dawns on you. What the fuck is happening? While your eyes adjust to the dark room, you see two familiar eyes staring straight back at you. He stopped grinding his hips against you for a moment as if time stopped.
"...Nii-san?" you hesitated. His breathing was heavy and he stayed silent.
"Nii-san, what are you doing?" you asked in a panicked voice. You quickly tried to get up from your position, only to be held down by Sakusa’s muscular arms. His hand wrapped itself over your lips to prevent you from screaming.
“Be a good girl and stay quiet, (Y/N),” he whispered. A muffled scream tries to escape your lips. He continued to fuck you slowly, leaving a burning feeling in your walls. The same sore feeling that you would sometimes wake up to within the past few days.
For a moment, you pry his fingers off of your mouth. "I don't understand...Why are you...?" You yelped in surprise, horror, and pleasure as he delivered a sharp thrust from behind you. The smack of his hips against your bare ass made you cringe and feel so disgusted with yourself. Nii-san is actually inside me.
"My poor little sister," he chucked darkly. He suddenly wraps his arm around your knee tighter and forces your legs wide open, your knee almost touching your chest. Instead of putting his hand over your mouth to shut you up, he kneads your breast. His hands were so large.
"You think you can walk around the house looking like a little slut in those tiny shorts?" He stretches you open with his hard cock with slow, yet hard, thrusts. It left your mouth agape, but no sounds left your throat except for small squeaks that you couldn't hold back. "You stupid bitch. Just as dumb as I could remember. Fuck, you don't know how much I wanted to bend you over and fill you up with my cum like the stupid, desperate slut you are."
He was satisfied as you were barely fighting him. All you did was desperately search for something to hold onto and bite your lip because you were so scared. His words were painful. "Look at you. A waste of fucking space, only good as a fuck hole. Didn't even realize she was getting drugged and getting fucked every night because she's so fucking stupid."
Weak. That was all your brain was telling you, mocking you, as Sakusa didn't stop moving against you and insulting you. This wasn't the first time. It just so happened that this time you were able to wake up.
"I-I..." you stuttered, "I'll...I'll tell mom and dad." The sheets were gripped tightly between your fingers. "I'll tell them- mmmm...what nii-san has been doing to me..."
"If you tell mom and dad, they wouldn't even care," Sakusa said in a patronizing tone. The way his hand was caressing you made you wanna cry.
“They would!”
"Mom and dad don't even treat you like a daughter, (Y/N). When was the last time they told you they loved you?" Even if his question was rhetorical, your mind went completely blank. You can't recall a moment where they ever told you they loved you.
"B-but, this isn't right! You're not supposed to be doing this," you argued. It was a surprise that your mind wasn't completely clouded by how big his cock was and how his thrusts felt almost hateful.
"You think they would choose your side? You'd be ruining your own life. Maybe you'd ruin mine. And it'd be. All. Your. Fault." With each syllable, his movements became sharper. "You don't wanna betray your nii-san by saying something, do you?"
"You love your nii-san, right?"
You do. You love him so much, even if you tried to avoid him and he never said a single good thing to you in your whole damn life.
Because you have to love him.
You stopped gripping on the sheets to the point where your knuckles were turning ghostly white to brush away the tears rolling down your cheeks. Your body shook, from both crying because of Sakusa's painful words and how hard he was fucking you. The pleasure building up in your core was overwhelming you, making that intense feeling of having to pee forced out of you.
Hearing your sniffles and small cries, Sakusa pulls you even tighter against him, but doesn't stop his relentless thrusting. It turned him on even more. He pushes your hand to brush away your tears for you, like good big brothers should.
"It's okay, (Y/N). We both know mom and dad don't love you."
A loud cry erupted from your chest. Maybe if your parents cared about you, they'd be running to your room to save you the second you started crying. But, no. Sakusa was basking in the fact that you were hurting on the inside. After years of negligent silence, you were finally letting it all out.
"But nii-san loves you," he said with a smile.
Although his words seemed to stun your entire being, you manage to choke out a "What?" Like it was the first time someone ever told you that they love you.
His torturous thrusts almost distracted you. Fuck, why did it feel so good to have your step brother fucking you on your side like this?
"I love you." He sweetly grabs your face so you can turn your head to look at him. There was a pounding in your ears coming straight from your chest. A warm feeling spreads throughout your stomach.
"You...you love me, nii-san?"
"Of course I do." He was actually smiling at you, "If I didn't, would I be inside you right now?"
His face didn't seem so blank anymore. Sakusa never ever smiled at you. Hell, he never really smiled in general. Someone actually loved you. Holy shit. And he was even pounding away at your insides like you were a fuck doll.
Is that why he's so mean? Was he just trying to hide his feelings for you this whole time? You could die laughing right now. His cock felt so damn good rearranging your guts against your will yet you were struggling to accept it.
Your cheeks naturally puffed up in happiness as you smiled so brightly at him. The flip switched in your brain so easily. Without another word, Sakusa kissed you passionately, because he knew you would let him continue to ravage your body. Your hips began to buck from the pressure building up in your lower half and you starting pushing your hips towards him, welcoming his length inside you. It felt like you needed more of him. More of his love.
Love me.
"Nii-san," you gasped against his lips. His movements never faltered, which you figured was from his amazing athletic ability and stamina.
"Be a good little sister and cum on my cock," he coaxed. He could tell you were so close to cumming from how tightly your precious cunt was hugging his length and how you were squirming against him. You were both slick with sweat. As you started squirming more violently against him, Sakusa tightened his grip on you.
“I’m gonna cum,” you whined desperately, “Nii-san, I’m gonna cum!” You grabbed his arms and pushed your fingernails into his skin, making him hiss from the sudden pain. With a firm grip over your mouth, he muffles your screams. Satisfaction settled in your stomach as you exploded all over his cock. Your sweet juices trailed down your thighs onto the bedsheets.
As much as Sakusa wanted to, he couldn’t fill up your insides and see your hole dripping with his cum just yet. He quickly pulls out of you and lets his seed shoot onto the bare skin of your ass. The shock of your orgasm left your thighs trembling, your skin wet, and your eyes drooping.
“You’re the best little sister.”
You would’ve replied, but you could barely form any words as you lost consciousness again. When you woke up the next morning, you were fully dressed and cleaned up, with no stickiness between your thighs like how you used to wake up.
Sakusa actually cleaned you up this time. You felt your heart melt and butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
Everything seemed to go back to normal between you two, with the same small talks and not really seeing each other often, but he always had a knowing smirk on his face whenever he saw you.
Whenever his eyes would trail up your body to meet yours, you could feel a warmth in your stomach spread all throughout your body which forced you to look away quickly. Whenever he insulted you, you would feel your thighs press together. Whenever you caught yourself admiring his features when he replaced his face mask for a new one, you smiled softly to yourself.
When it was time for him to leave, you couldn’t help but let a few tears shed. He was all set to go, with his backpack on and his mask covering his face.
“Hey, don’t cry, (Y/N),” he cooed, wiping your tears away, “You know I won’t be gone forever.”
You sniffled, “I know. I just hate being here alone.” Well, not necessarily alone. You just hated being ignored and neglected just because you weren’t your brother.
“If you manage to get into my college, you can move in with me. How does that sound?” You instantly perk up and dry your tears with your shirt.
"Really?!” you asked with excitement. You imagine all the things you could do with your nii-san without your parents in the picture. You could go out together, hold hands, share kisses, just about anything. He could even fuck you whenever he wants.
These thoughts about your own step brother would've made you feel sick before.
But that was before you knew Sakusa loved you. Now, you couldn't help but ask your mom when the next time your nii-san would be coming to visit. While you were waiting for his next visit, you studied hard.
College would be so much fun with your nii-san with you!

handwriting in OMITB episode 4
Some people were asking about the handwritten notes and whether they have any similarities. Figured I would get this up before the next episode drops, for anyone who’s interested.
I have to begin by saying that, of course, all of these handwriting samples are television props that were probably all written by various prop masters, and even if some of these props do contain clues to the killer, they could also furnish all kinds of false clues just due to the nature of TV production. (Buzzfeed Unsolved voice) That being said....
Tumblr media
Here's the note left under Oliver's door. All block caps, albeit a little untidy. Interestingly, features two totally different ways of writing the capital E, as well as two fairly different-looking styles of O.
Tumblr media
The note left under Charles's door (in a weirdly short amount of time for Jan to get all the way over there from her place on the other side of the courtyard, but that could just be an editing thing). Elegant and even, using normal capitalization; her capital D is quite distinctive; she connects her T's while the note-writer does not. No similarities that I can see.
I got curious and capped the other handwriting samples we see in ep. 4, which turns out to be quite a sampling.
Tumblr media
Above is the old Valentine's Day card from Lucy -- who is, we finally learn in this episode, basically Charles's ex-stepdaughter. I don't know any kids of Lucy's presumable age at the time of this card who would actually write a greeting card message (including signature!) in block caps like that, but that's clearly a production choice for the sake of legibility on the small screen and preserving the mystery of Lucy's identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charle's "Embrace the Mess" notecards, next to his other notecards on the murder board. I don't think we're considering any of the main three as suspects for anything at this point, but if we want to compare his handwriting with the threatening note, a closer look at his "Uma Heller" card:
Tumblr media
shows them to be very different. (I wonder if Charles's index cards were actually written in the writers' room? It looks more like writer handwriting. In scenic design you get really accustomed to block caps.)
Tumblr media
And to round out the line-up: Tim Kono's post-it note. Again very clear propmaster block caps, much like Lucy's card. You can spot the same G's and R's in the first "suicide note" paper from his trash, below:
Tumblr media
*
I do find the different E’s in the threat note intriguing. If there is a clue in the note, it could be that the note-writer is intentionally disguising their handwriting.
(In the olden days, people would cut and paste letters from a magazine to send their threatening notes sans handwriting. Ah, the lost arts…)

trigger warning: bullying, cursing/vulgar language, and violence (smacking, stepping and spitting). anxiety.
╭⋟─────────────────────╮
Your book is dripping wet, the pages turned to a fragile paste and falling apart at the touch. Your hair was wet, buckets of water had been prepared just for you. In your honor, four older girls had decided to go out of their way to prepare a bucket of water to dump all over your head.
“What did we tell you?” Their leader, Yui, kicked you in the stomach. “I thought we were very clear yesterday that you cannot talk to Kuroo-san.”
“And then you walked home with him!” One of the other girls spoke, but at this point their voices meshed together in your head. You tried staring at a paint chip on the ground to try and keep your cool.
I will not cry, I will not cry, I will not cry.
Your face was pulled off the rough pavement to face Yui’s face by your hair. The beautiful girl holds a fistfuls of your hair and you can get a good look at her this way. She really was gorgeous, she had long hair that was dyed a beautiful blond. You could hardly tell her bright blue contacts weren’t real since they fit into her soft features so well. Her makeup was nothing short of flawless, blending perfectly into her skin that made her look effortlessly beautiful. She looked like an idol, an angel in stood front of you, it was a striking contrast to her harsh words she’s given you over the last week.
“And now he posted about you, too! I told you that Kuroo-kun was mine. I should’ve said something weeks ago when I saw him talk to you here.” Yui stomped her foot, “Don’t you dare lie either, I saw him at your shoe locker this morning.”
“I’m not going to lie.” You said, your voice coming out much quieter than you thought. It was cold outside, and your clothes were wet. You didn’t even want to think about your white shirt.
“Good girl.” Yui smiled, “Now let’s talk about arrangements. Since you obviously didn’t listen yesterday. And I’m what they’d call Kuroo-kun’s guardian angel. I’ve always protected him from skanky bitches like you, who aren’t interested in Kuroo-kun for anything beyond what he can do for you. It’s not my first time, and it won’t be my last either. I love Kuroo-kun more than any of you and I’ve been at this a lot longer than you.”
What the hell is wrong with you?
You were cursing at her in your head, every bit of anger poured from your veins and forced you to clench your fist. This girl was pissing you off to no end, nobody was around at this point. Your fear of shyness being easily overwhelmed by the anger of being controlled.
A part of you selfishly wished that Inuoka or Kuroo would enter this scene right now and intervene. But they couldn’t fix this for you. They weren’t always going to be with you. And you weren’t someone who was going to be smacked around by these girls anymore. This girl must’ve been the one that started those rumors about you that forced Kuroo to intervene for you. You didn’t want anyone to have to do that for you.
“Kuroo-san would never like a girl like you.” You said. You would be proud to know your face never wavered as you spoke. Your voice had only a slight shake, the only tell being the shakes of your hand. Every word granted you a half ounce more of confidence.
“Do you want to say that again, dog?” She stepped on your hand with her foot, all her spite being aimed at you.
“What? I told you I wasn’t going to lie.” You kept your face plain. She spit in it and threw you down. You wiped the disgusting vile away with the back of your hand.
“Keep talking! See what happens.” This was a bet you’re willing to take.
“You’re a very pretty girl. But you’re mean, petty, vengeful, controlling and most of all an idiot if you think I can control how Kuroo-san feels. It’s not my fault he likes me. And if you really liked him, you should want him to be happy, but instead you try to block him off from anything that’d do that.” You said it all while she hardly listened, yawning as you spoke.
“Are you done?” She asked, you groaned in response. God she was so annoying.
She smacked you.
“You’re going to act like you know him after a few weeks? I’ve been in love with him for three years. He always has doted on me before you got here, he tutored me, gave me parts of his lunch, and he even gave me his jacket when I forgot my umbrella. Every third year girl knows that he’s mine. He’s too mature for younger girls like you, especially ones with their head in the clouds and nose in a book. You don’t even interact with anyone! What’s so good about you! Nothing! So don’t you dare try to act like you’re better than me!” She said her own speech, ending it with pushing her foot down on your thigh. Your knee scratching against the pavement.
“Kuroo-san isn’t a thing you can own..” It was taking everything in you not to cry, you’ve always had a hard time when people yell at you. But the part of you that wanted to defy authority was still winning at the moment.
“God! You’re so annoying. Just listen to me and break up with him so he can love me already! I’m tired of waiting!” Yui was yelling, you were starting to hear voices in the windows behind you crowding over. Your eyes drifted down, your shirt was totally see-through. This was so embarrassing.
You put your arms over your chest to protect yourself. You scolded yourself for not bringing out your jacket.
“No.” You said, strong and out-front.
“I think this is the most this girl has ever spoken..”
“Normally she’s such a crybaby..”
You heard everything anyone was saying around you. But you couldn’t bring yourself to care anymore. None of those people knew you.
“You insolent little bitch–”
“Oh? Big word there, did that make you feel like an adult? You read that one in a book?” You were completely unfiltered at this point. None of it mattered to you. Your clothes were wet, your hair was frazzled, your knees scraped and your face spit on. If there was one thing you could do to protect yourself it was your mouth. You had to.
“Shut up! Be thankful your senpai hasn’t ruined your life. Just let him go! You don’t even like him!” She was really fuming, there may as well be smoke coming out of her ears. “I can tell you’re scared, just agree so we can finish this.”
“That’s not true.” You said, your face blushing as the first sign of emotion this whole time.
“Oh, look, she’s blushing.”
“She’s actually so cute.”
“Gah! I hate you!” Yui raises her hand again, the only interruption being the heavy metal door to the courtyard being opened.
“Stop, stop! Yui, what the fuck are you doing!?” Kuroo, the man of the hour, ran into the courtyard and immediately stripping his blazer off.
“Kuroo-kun! I’m so glad your here, she was being so mean to us! I was just–” It was Yui’s turn to panic. Her voice quivered as she quickly mustered up tears to fake.
“You think I’m going to believe that when she looks like this?” Kuroo quickly wrapped you in his blazer, the large fabric covering you. His warmth flew threw you as he helped you to your feet and held you into his chest protectively. Your cold skin stealing Kuroo’s warmth. You hadn’t really realized how cold you were.
“I heard you had a volleyball meeting today–”
“After school. Even if I did, did you think I wouldn’t come running after I hear about my girlfriend getting bullied?” Kuroo said, his hand wrapping around your head. Your face was hidden, but he could feel you gasp for breath. The emotions you had been trying to hid getting lost in his chest, your stiff fingers gripped the fabric of his sweater vest. Kuroo’s large palm straightened them against his chest, warming them. “God, she’s freezing.”
“Girlfriend?” Yui was really crying now.
“Yes. Y/N is my girlfriend, and if anyone has a problem with this from now on bring that to me.” Kuroo’s deep voice boomed through the courtyard, it was a warning.
“You can’t be serious! It’s only been a few weeks, you’ll just drop her anyways in a few days right?” Yui had never been caught by Kuroo before, whenever a new girl would try to get close to Kuroo he’d never really minded if they lost touch after a few days. But you were someone he sought out, and tried so hard to figure out, he would never let it go that easy.
“Even if it did, you have no right to do any of this. But I’ll be with Y/N as long as she lets me, because I have deep feelings for her. I don’t expect you to understand but neither of us would ever throw the other away so easily as you’re saying. So leave us the fuck alone.” You had never seen him so angry before. But still he was so delicate to you, lowering his head to your ear to whisper a soft: “Are you ok? You did awesome, but this is over now. Let’s get you to the infirmary.”
“I’m sorry.” You said, but it was muffled by his shirt. His chest was so warm and firm, it made you somewhat sad to lose the warmth when he pulled away for only a second.
“Yui, I’m sorry I can’t return your feelings. If I had known you’d feel that way, I would’ve been able to end this sooner. But don’t worry, I won’t be going out of my way for you in the future to avoid any misunderstandings.... I’m going to take her to the infirmary, and I’m telling the nurse everything that happened here.” Kuroo held a strong frame, you winced when you took a step.
Your knee stung from the blood running down your leg. Kuroo didn’t want you to be here any longer than you needed to be, so he latched his palms under your knee and threw your arm over his shoulder. Bridal style he held you in his arms, girls squealed behind you. Your face practically being glued to his shoulder to hide your embarrassment.
The moment you were back inside you felt warmer. You squeezed him tighter to yourself. You were so afraid, allowing yourself to so easily be weak in front of him.
“W–wait.. Kuroo..” You were letting tears fall. He rolled you in his arms to better hold you there. Your hair smelled like a morning rainfall, you were so cold.
“Not yet. We’re not alone.” He said.
The rest of the time you spent in his arms was silent. And when he got you to the infirmary he was ushered to go back to his class since the bell rang.
“Please, she’s my girlfriend. Can I please stay with her?” You could hear him beg the nurse on the otherside of the curtain from where you were changing out of your wet clothes.
It made you smile, you didn’t know a title like this would make you smile. He never asked you, but he sure got comfortable with it really fast. Maybe it wasn’t real though, you tried to slow your heart beat from beating out of your chest at the thought.
“I’m sorry but school comes first. You can come see her later. She’ll be fine.” The nurse assured him. You peaked your head out from behind the curtain.
“Thank you.” You mouthed it to him and it seemed he understood.
Kuroo didn’t seem pleased, but he still nodded. He bowed to the nurse quickly before exiting. Once on the other side of the door he looked at his hands, his sleeves were still wet from where he held you in his arms. He was chilly from losing his blazer that was now with you. The view he had of the top of your head being forcibly pushed into his chest. His chest still tingled from the imprint of your face.
“Kuroo Tetsuro, you’re awful for thinking like this..” he scolded himself. He just had to pull you out of a situation that he caused, it was because of him that they were bullying you. He needed to apologize properly, but his mind couldn’t help but melt at how close you were to him. How it seemed you invited him to be closer. This 6’3” boy reduced to a crumbled, blushing mess as he squatted next to the infirmary door.
Girlfriend.
Wait.
“She’s my girlfriend....” Kuroo remembered saying that in front of everyone, “Did I... say that out loud?..”
Both his hands were used to smack himself. His face didn’t react from the shock, eyes still wide with two hand prints leftover on his cheeks. He didn’t even ask you to be his girlfriend! What had gotten into him! Even in the heat of the moment, he should have taken at least one second to ask and then ask properly later. No, that would’ve looked suspicious. How rude of him to ignore your feelings like that and announce it in front of everyone without your permission.
I’ve been so good at asking her for everything up until now. What if she’s scared of me again? No, if she wants me to I’ll start at stage 1... Maybe Yamamoto was right, I really am a simp for her..
He thought, a small smile still on his face. He was okay with that. You were so strong out there. He only caught a few moments but watching you talk back all on your own was inspiring. You could defend yourself, any normal person would’ve let it go but Yui was a different breed that Kuroo knew too well. Watching you speak so boldly was a treasure that would live in his mind, the last domino of hearing your voice say “That’s not true.” to protext your feelings for him. But that was all he was able to catch of the conversation since he couldn’t stand there knowing that your hand wasn’t shaking from the cold.
Does she really have feelings for me? Is it true? If I would’ve asked.. would she have.. his thoughts stopped abruptly as he looked to his right at the infirmary where you stayed. What were you thinking right now? Were the thoughts you had as embarrassing as his? An image of you popped in his head, probably not. His chest was so tight and warm and the thought. He can’t think like this in the situation you’re in. He should’ve tried to stay in there longer, but maybe any longer and he would’ve burst.
He looked back at his arms, the ones he held you in. The water has dried now, ang trace that you were in them was gone. He really missed that feeling. If it were up to him right now, you’d never walk again so you could always stay in his arms.
Girlfriend..
He’d have to apologize later for overstepping his boundaries and explain later but... he’d never apologize about how it felt far too natural to say.

The Night the Silver Cape is Set Ablaze CH2
Tumblr media
<2> First Advance Notice
In the Sky Joker's living room, Hachi handed Joker an advance notice written on manila paper.
"W-What are we gonna do?" Hachi looked up at Joker with a worried gaze. Hachi, who wore an aqua-colored hood snugly over his head, was a descendant of ninjas. He had met Joker by chance when trying to steal a treasure and had pleaded with him to become his apprentice. He was now Joker's trusty right hand, and not only did he help with his work, he also handled all the household chores.
With Hachi's eyes on him, Joker read the old-fashioned notice.
I humbly inform you that I will be taking the Crimson Crystal you stole tonight. I will arrive post-haste. Be prepared for me.
—Phantom Thief Noir
"How'd this get here?"
"When I went outside to collect the laundry earlier, Hosshi found it stuck to one of the sheets."
"Hosshi!" exclaimed Hosshi next to Hachi.
Hoshi was a small, squishy, orb-shaped, cat-like creature that had been living with Joker and Hachi since they found him at a site of ruins. The shining yellow stars on his cheeks wobbled as he smiled and bounced cutely around Hachi.
"Hmmm..." Joker studied the advance notice. Locating the Sky Joker while it was in the air was a difficult task. After all, given his line of work, he couldn't let his hideout be discovered easily. This person had sent advance notice right to the Sky Joker, and also knew that Joker had just stolen the Crimson Crystal. This "Phantom Thief Noir" was no amateur...
"But I've never heard of anyone who calls themselves 'Phantom Thief Noir'."
"You're right, I haven't heard of them either. Joker-san, did you make an enemy somehow without realizing?"
"Excuse you. I'm upstanding and gentlemanly, nobody's got any ill will against me!"
"Since when! You said before that there are so many people who hate you that you can't keep track of them all." Hachi gave him a dubious look. Kaneari, whom he had just stolen from, wasn't the only one. Shadow and plenty of others were hounding Joker.
"We may not know who Noir is, but shouldn't we come up with some measures against them?"
"Measures? Naaah, too much work," said Joker as he threw himself onto the sofa.
"Joker-san?"
"Ahh, Shadow was there too, so I'm worn out. Hachi, can you make dinner early?"
"Are you sure you can be so lax about this?"
"I mean, there's nothing to do until this Noir guy gets here, yeah?"
"There's plenty that you could do! Like hiding the treasure, setting up some traps, formulating a plan... Kaneari-san does all sorts of things when he gets a notice from you, Joker-san!"
"But despite all that, has Kaneari ever once protected a treasure from me?"
"Eh... well, no, but..."
"See? Ultimately, getting treasure all depends on the skill of the would-be thief. Doesn't matter how much you set up in advance. It's a match where you have to read each other's minds," Joker said, before taking the Crimson Crystal out of his pocket and letting it catch the light. The crystal gleamed as it reflected the light from the ceiling. The globular surface of the crystal diffused and scattered the light like a prism. Joker was captivated by its beauty for a while.
"I get why he wants to steal this... but!" Joker sat up. "He's not getting it easily!"
"Hm, now that's the spirit," came a voice from the dining room suddenly.
"Eh!?" Joker and Hachi turned around in surprise to see a boy sitting on a chair in the dining room. The boy twisted open a glass bottle with a hiss and took a swig of the beverage inside.
"Spade!"
At Joker's exclamation, the boy called Spade turned to face him. "Hi, Joker. Happy to see me again?"
"I'm not happy! Where'd you come in from!?" Joker gnashed his teeth and glared.
Spade was, like Joker, a phantom thief. He wore a violet scarf and snowy white coat. His long azure hair cascaded over it, and a crest of golden hair shone over his forehead. He was a well-groomed, handsome youth.
"Settle down. This Riviera is exquisite when chilled, Dark Eye."
"Yes, Spade-sama." Standing beside Spade was Dark Eye, whose head was wrapped in bandages. They opened a bottle of the beverage as well. Dark Eye was Spade's assistant, who was female under the guise.
The Riviera which Spade was drinking is a popular drink all over the world, and both Joker and Spade loved it. As Joker said, it was the perfect drink to have after a difficult caper.
"But I must say, it's much more soothing at my own home. This place is always so raucous and dusty," Spade said, clearing his throat deliberately.
"If you're gonna complain, then leave!"
"I came here to ask you about Phantom Thief Noir."
"Wha-!?"
"Spade-san, do you know about Phantom Thief Noir?"
Joker and Hachi leaned forward and gaped at Spade.
"Did you get a notice too!?"
"Notice...?" Spade looked puzzled for a moment.
"You didn't receive an advance notice?" Hachi asked.
Spade answered jitteringly, putting the pieces together.
"Y-Yes, right! That was an advance notice. Will you show me the notice that arrived here?" he asked, holding out his hand.
Hachi handed Spade the notice, which Spade examined closely. "Hm... It's the same type of paper as the slip I received. This tells us a lot about this man calling himself Noir."
"It does?" Hachi asked, to which Spade responded ponderously.
"Hm... Noir seems to be much older. He's naturally left-handed, but has corrected himself to be right-handed. He lived in France at some point, and he likes popcorn..." Spade waved the notice and listed out each point.
"Kyo kyo. Impressive, Spade-sama," nodded Dark Eye with admiration.
"Don't make stuff up," Joker said wearily, but Hachi ignored him.
"How do you know that?"
"Simple. When this notice is held up to the light, you can see that it has a watermark written in French. This paper was produced by a maker in France. But that company went under over thirty years ago, so this paper is no longer on the market. Therefore, the fact that he was able to buy this proves he's up there in years. His letters angle upwards, which is a quirk commonly seen in corrected southpaws. And this oil mark has a residual smell of salt and butter, so it must be from popcorn. He must like it considerably if he has it around even when writing an advance notice." Spade rattled off his reasons.
Hachi was wholly amazed. Spade had gleaned so many traits of the sender from just a small piece of paper. "Huh! You're incredible, Spade-san! It's like you're a detective!"
Spade slipped down a little. "Ha ha, you could say that," he laughed. "Deductions aren't exclusive to detectives. Phantom thieves have to be able to deduce, too. Of course, Joker already knew all of this, yes?" he said, bringing Joker back in.
Caught off-guard, Joker went along with what he was saying. "Huh? Y-Y-Yeah, 'course I did! I figured that all out yesterday!"
"The advance notice hadn't arrived yet yesterday."
"Shush!"
Then Spade sighed. "Really now... why did Noir send advance notice to you, of all people?"
"Kyo kyo, it's a mystery..." Dark Eye's shoulders dropped, and so did Spade's.
"Shut up! What did you come here for, anyway!?"
"I just wanted to discuss this man called Phantom Thief Noir with you."
"I've got nothing to discuss with you. I bet you just had your treasure targeted by Noir and started second-guessing yourself, right?"
"S-Say what?"
"Ever since way back when, you've had trouble getting anything done on your own!"
"HUH? I came here out of the goodness of my heart. I knew that instead of speculating on Noir's identity or formulating a decent plan, you'd try to come up with something random on the spot!"
"Oh yeah!? Well that's my style!" Joker argued as he scowled at Spade.
"He's got a point there, Hosshi."
"Hosshi."
Hachi and Hosshi murmured to each other. But the pair weren't done bickering yet.
"Besides, I don't need a plan! A phantom thief's battle starts when he shows up, that's what makes it interesting!"
"And how much trouble do you think your lack of preparedness has caused me!?"
"When did I ever give you trouble!?"
"Plenty of times!"
"Then be specific! What year, month, day, hour, minute, and second!? What planet, country, region, prefecture, city, ward, block, address, and room number!?"
"That childish attitude of yours is the issue!"
"Shut up! If I'm childish, then so are you!"
"I'm more mature than you, at least!"
"Someone who's mature doesn't shout like that!"
"You're the one shouting so loud!"
"I'm what!?"
"Got a problem!?"
Their foreheads were pressed tightly together as they snarled at each other with vehement looks.
"Cut it out!"
"Kyo kyo, please stop!"
Once Hachi and Dark Eye intervened as usual, Joker and Spade finally pulled away from each other and simultaneously looked the other way with a "Hmph!"
"We're leaving, Dark Eye. It seems Joker has no need of my generosity," Spade beckoned to Dark Eye, and he started walking toward the door. Joker jeered from behind him.
"Yeah, go ahead and leave. I don't need your stinking 'generosity'. I don't trust you in the first place!"
"Likewise," he said, turning back around. Joker and Spade glared at each other once more.
"Don't come back!"
"Who would!"
Spade placed a hand on the exterior door. "It was quite a displeasure..." Spade said, and jumped out into the open. Dark Eye hurried after him.
"Bleh! That's what I wanna say!"
After watching Spade's airship, the Twin Thunder Shark, fly away, Hachi turned back around to Joker. Joker was grumbling and taking out his anger on a cushion. His temper was worse than usual this time...
"Joker-san, you went too far."
"Hmph! I went just far enough for him. The way he's always so patronizing and tries to tell me what to do pisses me off." Joker lay back down on the sofa.
Is that the truth? wondered Hachi. Maybe Spade had come to visit Joker because he was worried. The two of them may have been rivals, but they had once lived together under the same roof. Perhaps Spade had wanted to talk to Joker about Noir, as an old friend... If Spade had received an advance notice as well, he was definitely at least a little uneasy. And if he came to consult with Joker, who might have also received a notice, then...
Hachi remembered how Spade had looked a little desolate from behind when exiting. Joker had calmed down a little by now and was lying down with his back turned, sulking. Hachi sighed, when...
Suddenly, lightning flashed outside the window, and a loud tremor shook the Sky Joker...

Fairytale Complex - [Undertale | Sans x Reader]
[Gender Neutral, Frisk's Parent Reader]
Chapter One | Home
[Previous] | [Next]
(Author Note, written in November 2020 and updated on May 2021: For those who've already read the prologue, two changes happened: [1] the story title went from Goodnight, Starlight to Fairytale Complex, and [2] since this's a rewrite of an older work, the main/focus relationship would now be Sans, but there will still be alternate relationships, other main four being Papyrus, Muffet, Grillby, and Napstablook! More info on that can be found on Chapter Sixteen | Dummy! (Part 3 of 3).)
• • •
Your phone lights up and buzzes erratically, waking you up and forcing you to get out of bed when it proves to be too far away for you to reach it. The screen marks an unholy five thirty five in the morning, and you can only wonder over what your aunt wants to discuss with you at such an early hour. There's around two urgent voicemails, eleven text messages, and three missed calls, all from her, so you decide on phoning her back to get things over with.
She answers fast, hardly giving the phone a chance to beep once.
"Turn on the TV right now, honey," your aunt shouts, an indistinguishable emotion between anger and shock displayed in her voice. "Now," she repeats, authority shown in that single word. "And don't forget to call me later. We need to talk." She hangs up after that, leaving you with more questions than you once had.
You raise a brow at the oddity of her call, yet relent with how tired both your mind and body feel. You'd left work at eleven at night, only to arrive home at midnight and fall asleep at one. With barely five hours of rest in your system, you don't exactly feel motivated to watch television, yet that changes when you sit at the edge of your bed, turn it on, and see the first thing there is a breaking news report taking over every cable channel present. No matter which one you switch to, it's there, reporting over the rise of a whole new species of living beings, these capable of human reasoning and conduct, as one of the reporters and even a scientist so claimed based on the little information they've both gathered about the species already. They proceed to display a picture of a large crowd of people gathered near a mountain, these looking straight out of a fantasy novel. They vary greatly, from bipedal, anthropomorphic fish, bears, bunnies, goats, and spiders, to living skeletons, ghosts, and live, humanoid flames. You have to rub sleep away from your eyes and blink a few times to process what's going on, until you see who's standing smack in the middle of them all.
"F- Frisk?!" you shout, breaking the silence of your home and the night.
Almost immediately, you pick up your phone and search for more information on where and when the picture was taken. The sun seemed to be setting in it, and based on when the news had chosen to report on the event, you figure Frisk has to be with that group somewhere around. You access the news channel's main page and see a pinned post asking for information on the child's parents, comment section blocked to prevent a flood in them, along with the share button to keep any second parties from spreading it around more.
>> A goat lady by the name of Toriel has taken Frisk under her temporary care while authorities regain contact with the child's parents. If anyone reading this post happens to know about their location, number, or any other contact information, please do let us know over at private message, so that we may interview them personally. We have searched far and wide for more thorough information on the child, but Child Protective Services have settled upon keeping that information private, while the child refused to tell us anything else after they found out over what penalties their parents would be receiving. They insist that their primary caregiver is a good person, that they do not know about their secondary caregiver's whereabouts, and that they will not allow anything bad to happen to either of them, refusing to so much as give up their last name to us as a result. However, we are still in dire need of said information in order to interview the parents and perform more proper investigations as to why the child disappeared for a period of almost two whole months.
Below the basic gist stands a shorter paragraph and a photo of a different monster, this one a skeleton instead of a goat woman.
>> In addition to the goat lady offering to look after Frisk for the time being, another monster has reached out to us and left his number only specifically for the parents. He states it is necessary they meet and that he would like to offer an explanation as to what happened at the Underground and how Frisk got there. If you are one of the parents, please contact us through private message so that we may provide you with his number and further directions on what to do from there.
You check the time of the post, lock your phone, and set it aside when the news returns from a commercial break, this one much shorter compared to usually.
"Passerby say it sounded similar to that of a bomb going off, yet there were no signs of destruction and nobody near when they made it to the place where they heard the noise. It's estimated the Barrier broke at late evening, and that the monsters left with Frisk barely an hour after that event, without bothering to inform anyone over the missing child's arrival. Authorities claim they've yet to gain contact with Frisk's secondary caregiver and that they are now on their way to contact their primary one. Given the circumstances and the current hour, Child Protective Services believe it best to visit at noon, as they have already tracked down the parent's location and received further information on the subject through social media. That's all we've managed to cover so far, but remember to stay tuned for more at-"
“(Mom/Dad), I'm home!”
Your eyes shoot open and you almost have to double take when you hear that voice. It's followed by a few persistent knocks on the door, though you still go as far as to check the pulse on your wrist to make sure you're still alive. You turn the television off, hop out of bed, and rush over to the living room, where you're greeted with the sight of Frisk standing by the entrance and looking around, their own set of keys balanced on their finger as they take in their surroundings. They continue to look this way and that, observing the changes you've made to the house since they were gone.
They meet with your eyes and freeze up, taking a small, precautionary step forward. "I… I missed you," they mutter, voice soft and quiet, a large difference from when they announced they were back home. They fiddle with their hands and face at the floor, casting a guilty look at the worn welcome mat as they say, "I'm sorry for… for disappearing like that. But I promise I-"
Before they can finish speaking, you've already made it to their side. Your arms wrap around them and you bring them in for a strong and lasting embrace, tucking their head against your chest, squeezing them tight, and allowing them to listen to your heart beat. "Oh, sweetheart, forget all that," you reply, stroking their hair and kissing their forehead. "I… I missed you, too." You hold them tight and let some of your worries out through another squeeze. It feels almost bizarre having them in your arms again, but it feels right all the same. Every puzzle seems to fall right into place, and the only thing in your mind right now's their well-being. "H- How are you, by the way?" you ask, breaking the hug apart. "Are you hungry? ...Sleepy? And who brought you here? Did they treat you well?"
"I'm okay," they reply, giggling. "Miss Toriel made me some food before we left, and I'm way too pumped to even think about sleeping!"
"And where is Miss Toriel?"
"She left right after we got here. She said she didn't want to bother you now that I'm back, and that you could meet up with her some other time!"
You hug them yet again, still too stricken to let go of them. "I'm… I'm so glad you're back home, dear," you whisper, holding them close as you mutter more sentences with similar sentiments to the previous one. You still can't shake off your shock nor can you believe this is real. The rational part of your brain insists it's no time to be emotional and that you need answers stat, though the emotional part demands you pour all your attention onto the moment and appreciate Frisk's return. You'd cried countless hours, days, nights, and weeks. And all of that pent up regret, confusion, and relief begins to be let out through whispered words, strong hugs, and gentle caresses. "I… I thought you were gone for good, dear, an- and that you left because you hated me." You hiccup at that last statement and hold them tighter, fearing another disappearance. "I'm sorry if I ever made you feel bad about me being your (mother/father). And… And I'm sorry for anything I might've done to upset you. I- I'll try to be a better parent for you from now on, and you can tell me over where I can improve. Alright?"
Frisk breaks the hug apart and faces up at you with a frown. "What are you saying? I don't hate you, (mom/dad)!" they reply, gaze furrowed and eyes wide. "I… I was thinking about something else that day. B- But it has nothing to do with you. I promise!"
"Then why did you disappear?" you ask, placing a hand over their shoulder and maintaining your frown. "Why did you run away? ...And just what do you mean by that? What were you thinking about before you disappeared?"
Looking caught, they face the floor and fiddle with their hands again. "...Can we talk about that later? I think I'm feeling sleepy now."
Your glare finally shows through, the rational part of you taking over now. "Don't you dare change the subject, Frisk (L/N). What did you mean by that? What happened before you disappeared?"
"Please, (mom/dad)! I can tell you later," they whine, tears welling up in their eyes. "I- I don't wanna talk about that right now. I miss you. And I… I really wanna be with you right now. I really miss my home, I miss studying with you, and I... I miss going out on weekends with you, too."
You straighten your posture, cross your arms tight, and frown, still unconvinced. "Can you promise me you'll tell me first thing tomorrow, after we catch up today?"
Slowly, they nod. "I promise."
"Pinky promise?"
Frisk smiles bright and wide at your suggestion and at the gesture you make, pinky finger offered out to them. They interlock theirs with yours and let go when you both nod, sealing the deal. "I promise. Could we go watch a movie now?"
"Didn't you say you were sleepy?"
"I sleep better with the TV on!"
"Yeah, right." Despite yourself, you giggle and smile at them. Then, you place a hand on their head and mess up their hair, poking your tongue out when they glare at you. "Let's go, then. Just... Remember me to call my boss so I can take the day off today and go to work a bit later tomorrow."
"...Can you really do that? I thought you could get fired for that!"
"Probably not." You laugh. "But you're my main and only priority right now. And I can just try to find another job after all this's over with."
You offer your hand out to them and lead the way back to your bedroom when they take it. Your heart's still racing and you've yet to acknowledge the fact they're finally back with you, though your happiness continues to persist through it all; they're here and that's all that matters right now. Worry would come in later.
"Why did you move the TV to the bedroom, though?" they ask, halfway through your destination.
You squeeze their hand and stare down at them, managing a guilty and meek smile. "I, uh, might've... borrowed your dad's Netflicks password, and tried watching some movies since you went missing. I could barely sleep at night, so I just tried distracting myself by finding something new to watch." You let go, finally reaching the door of your bedroom. "I also made sure to tidy up your bedroom once a week, just in case you ever came back, so it's all nice and clean if you want to go there later," you say, smiling. "But... I'm guessing you'd want to be with me for awhile now?"
They nod, not an ounce of reluctance present in their actions. "Definitely!" They flinch back and giggle when you kiss their cheek as a response, "Can I, really?"
"As long as you fulfill your promise, then yes. You can stay in my bedroom for as long as you want, dear."
"But didn't you say I was a big kid just last year?"
"Yes, but I…" You chew on your lip and blink back tears, their return finally dawning on you. "I missed you too much to care about that right now."
You turn on the television and access Netflicks, putting on a movie and climbing into bed. They do the same and rest their head against your lap, cuddling against you. You both stay that way for the entirety of the movie, with them close and with your hand on their head, stroking their hair until they fall asleep halfway in.
When you're sure they're out like a light, you allow yourself to cry again; tears continue to go down the more time you spend with Frisk close to your side.
They were back.
Your prayers had been answered, and now you wouldn't have to lay awake at night, feeling guilty and mourning over their loss for hours on end.
Hopefully, Child Protective Services and Frisk's school would go easier on you now; despite what you said about not minding if they were taken away after their return, you do care. Now that they're back in your arms, you can't imagine not having the right to visit them again; a world without them. At that thought, sorrow overflows your mind and you find yourself crying quietly during what's left of another movie, uncontrolled yet quiet as you try not to wake or worry Frisk over your state. You needed to be strong for their sake and for your own as well, if the time to part ways from them ever became a reality.
That's the last thing you think of as you close your eyes, exhaustion finally taking your body for itself. Faint murmurs of an ongoing movie are the last things you hear and the sight of Frisk sleeping peacefully on your lap is the last thing you see. It all feels right, yet not; cherishing these final moments is the only thing you can do for now.

Imagine (based on the incomplete fanfic Son of Underworld) (3/5) (Son of Hades! Percy AU)
Before reading, check the masterpost - and read the warnings before proceeding :)) Good reading!
Percy goes back to Yancy, and things proceed as normal. He has nightmares, he misses his mom, who he only saw for a week. He thinks back on last summer and asks himself if it's worth going back to.
Annabeth tries to go back to her father's family. It doesn't go well, but at least they could keep contact using a landline for the three months she can deal with the monsters in her father's new location. There's a weekend he tries to visit her in San Francisco - but he still isn't perfect and lands in Sacramento.
It takes him an hour and a half to reach her - and it's the best weekend of the year, even if he doesn't meet anyone in her family - she is afraid they'll double the monsters in her house.
And her stepmom is racist. So there's that.
Annabeth makes fun of his Academy Uniform, the blazer and the black gloves, the red tie that he hates, and he calls her Wise Girl - he is two grades over her because of her years as a runaway.
It feels a little like a date. There's pizza, and they hold hands when she takes him to see the Golden Gate. He notices that Annie's eyes look literally like molten silver - every demigod carries a trace of their parent, he finally notices.
He can't come back after that - they were attacked by a Hydra, and killing it was only possible because he managed to use fire - a green, weird fire that he did not know he had - to cauterize the stumps.
Blackjack shadow travels him back to Yancy Academy and he and Annie keep the contact for another two weeks before she has to go back to Camp since San Francisco is becoming too dangerous.
It's his last year of middle school. Next year, he doesn't know if he'll continue in Yancy or go for a scholarship at Phillips Academy, in Massachusetts.
It's far. It's almost four hours from his mother, it's six hours from Camp. But it's the best school on the East Coast.
He does his midterms exams. He is in all high of A+ in Geometry, Algebra II, Economics and Government, Ancient World History, and Health&PE.
U.S. History and Science keep between B- and D+, and he is okay with that.
Language Arts and World Cultures can go die in a hole. He hates reading, writing makes him anxious and the only language he can get a C+ is Latin.
They give him a tutor for English - his GPA is only sustained by math. His grades raise a little: They go from F to E+.
There's a girl being tutored with him. She is Cherokee and a grade below him - her name is Piper.
He hates verbs. He hates To Kill a Mockingbird. He will kill a mockingbird if it stops them asking him to read again.
He cheats in his essays - makes skeletons write them for him. They suspect - it's not his handwriting, it's not the way he writes, it has no errors.
They can't prove it, so he scrapes Language Arts with a D+.
His midterm GPA is amazing. He goes see his mother for Christmas, even though he thinks there's no Christ. Maybe. Who knows? He is not celebrating Jupiternalia anyway.
He barely put his bag down when his four weeks with his Mom go down the drain - Thalia and Annabeth appear in his door. He grabs his backpack, his weapons, and go.
Annabeth looks at his hands with wonder - it's the first time she sees them bare in two years, but he puts his gloves back quickly enough.
Thalia is less skittish around him, and that's good. Better, at least. He notices that her eyes aren't only green - there are waves in them, it's like looking at the sea. It changes with her humor, perhaps? He doesn't know.
They make fun of his uniform - but they are going to Westover Hall, and he will merge better if he looks like a preppy kid from a boarding school.
Percy knows about the Mist this time. He helps Thalia to control it - his heart aches when he thinks of his friends. Its been a year and a half now. He misses them.
The daughter of Zeus asks him who taught him.
"The same person who taught you"
She looks at him appreciatively now, but he knows he'll come short of whoever she is measuring him against.
They see the kids. There's a girl looking nervous and overlooking the gym, and a boy by her side fiddling with his cards. Their hair is black just like his - he wishes for a brother and a sister.
Their skin is not like his - but it doesn't matter that they have a different mom, does it? In the end, it's family. Grover says they're powerful - so Big Three might be a possibility.
They're not children of Poseidon - their skin lacks the tan and the hair lacks the messiness, the windswept look - And Zeus is a lot of things, but a hypocrite isn't one of them, is?
Percy dances with Annabeth, and he feels alive. Then, he is running to save the children.
He doesn't shadow travel them. Shadowtravelling with more than one person is tricky, and he still hasn't mastered not going to Wyoming.
He kills the manticore with his Warhammer, but as it crumbles to dust, Annabeth falls.
The earth trembles at his feet - but it's Thalia's hand in his shoulder that remembers him there's two kids here, and Artemis Hunt is all looking at him with varying degrees of disgust and fear.
It's nothing he is not acquainted with. For being black (and not even a normal shade of black), for his clothes, for not having a father, for having a father and it being Hades. Just now, he was being judged for being a man.
Misandry is news for him. His mother raised him to respect all genders (even when he discovered a few months ago there's more than two), that women deserve the same as men. Annabeth fights alongside him frequently enough. Clarisse wipes the floor with his ass. Katie Gardner doesn't - it doesn't make her weaker, or less deserving of respect.
He knows women have to fight for their place in society much more than he has to. He knows these women are probably traumatized by violent men and unable to fight back.
It still doesn't make it right for them to be bullies. It gives a reason, but not a justification.
And when they take Bianca Di Angelo, who has a little brother and barely has any idea of what she is doing, who was just attacked by a thing that shouldn't exist and is probably still in shock, he wants to scream.
Artemis sees something in Bianca - and he finally looks at the girl's eyes. There's a storm raging in them.
Zeus is a hypocrite, after all.
But it's not his place to say anything, nor to the children, nor against Artemis, so he just leaves the tent and goes ask the only other boy here to teach him Mythomagic.
Nico Di Angelo asks way too many questions and has an infinite source of energy. He is prideful - a trace common of all Zeus children. His eyes aren't stormy like his sisters, there aren't clouds in his irises. They are white, like his probable father's lighting bolt.
Nico asks him why he has green eyes - and why they turned black after the question. He doesn't know the answer.
Apollo appears and says something about flying in the sun car - it's the first time he and Thalia agree on something.
But calls for Blackjack. He is not flying, not even under a god's asking. Apollo understands.
Thalia goes with him. Better through shadows than through air. He doesn't want to leave Nico with the misandry archers - but he has Grover, and Percy would probably land them in Iowa.
The daughter of Poseidon holds his waist while they ride on the hellhound. He focuses the best he can - and, for the first time, he lands exactly where he wants to land: in the woods at Camp.
Thalia helps him get to the Big House under weird looks of the year-rounders. They are there at least three hours before Apollo.
"You're kinda heavy, Corpse Breath. But that was cool."
"Shut it, Kelp Head"
He is anxious to just leave and go back to his mother, but Annabeth is in danger: They need a quest.
He has dreams. He can't fault Annabeth for doing what he would've done without a second of hesitation. It's Luke.
He helps Nico settle at Cabin 11, and avoids the huntresses. Connor hugs him, and Clarisse wipes the floor with him in wrestling - they are his friends now.
Clarisse, Connor, Annabeth, Grover, Charles. Luke, Ethan, Alabaster. The scales are tipping. He doesn't care for masters - he cares who is the defending.
Artemis goes missing, and they finally get a quest. Zoe Nightshade doesn't want a boy in the quest but tough luck: He is the most experienced camper here right now AND the quest goes through a desert, so he is going.
There's some doubt about taking Thalia - she is a daughter of Poseidon and can't do much in the wasteland.
So it's decided: Phoebe, Bianca, Zoe, Perseus, and Grover. No one is happy about it, and Percy knows Thalia is going to follow them.
He introduces himself as Perseus to them. He is stoic and doesn't smile around the girls.
Capture the Flag is horrible. He doesn't leave his post and blocks Zoe with skeletons for enough time that Thalia manages to snag the flag and cross the river.
The huntresses get mad and try to fight the campers - Phoebe tries to hit Nico with the pommel of her sword and a lightning bolt hits her, putting her out of commission.
He is claimed. Bianca isn't, but it doesn't matter: She is not a camper, she is a hunter. Her loyalty is to her half-sister now.
They leave in the morning without Phoebe before anyone wakes up.
Bianca looks at him weirdly because of his soft white and blue sweaters and scrunchies that he started using to take off hair from his face, and the contrast it makes with his dark skin and demeanor.
Newsflash: He doesn't care for a prejudiced daughter of Zeus's opinion.
Zoe doesn't even look at him twice: They have trans girls in the hunt, they're caught up with modern times. Except for the misandry and the exclusion of genderfluid, agender and non-binary people. But sure, caught up.
Nico asks him to protect his sister. He says he is going to try, but he understands death better than some. He says it'll be dangerous, but he'll do his best.
For some reason, Nico doesn't look worried.
Thalia joins them in the Space museum. She came in her Pegasus, Porkpie, and they fight the Nemean Lion together. His hellhound startles the hunters, and Thalia laughs.
They kill the Nemean Lion, and Perseus thinks he finally perfects his power over the earth when he uses a stone spike to pierce the monster through the mouth and barely gets tired.
The duster is not his style, but beggars can't be choosers. Zoe is warming up to them, he thinks, but he doesn't care either way: his objective is Annabeth.
He still hasn't managed to open the ground or to control metal's proprieties, but he controls the earth beneath his feet, shadow travels (very badly controlled, but sure), raises armies of skeletons and money and gems just sprout when he wants them. He has power.
But he isn't completely in control yet, so he doesn't want anyone touching him. And it's been such a long time since anyone except his mother ever been close to any skin below his neck.
Perseus has dreams. He is grateful that Artemis took the sky for Annabeth, so he burns the coat in her name.
Thalia says she has met Apollo, and Perseus is glad at least one god is on their side.
Perseus feels in the air: life. This town is cloying with the smell of life, of forests and waterfalls. He hates it on principle but wishes she could enjoy it.
He kills a spartoi. He doesn't manage to kill more, but now he knows. He wishes he could open the ground and swallow all of them, but even his own skeletons he only manages to turn them into piles of bones.
The boar carries most of them: it's still just a boar and they are five, so both he and Thalia enjoy Blackjack, who now is almost the size of a small rhino.
Perseus meets Ares awake this time. He didn't snitch on him to the gods, but he wishes he did.
Meeting Aphrodite is awful. Percy looks at her, and he sees blonde hair that he can't decide if it's golden or brownish, he looks at her eyes and see the blue and grey fight for dominance in the irises. Her skin flicks, and he sees a scar crossing her eye.
For a moment, her skin turns as black as his - his desire for family.
He hates her more than he hates Ares when she looks at him with a smile and says that his love life will be the most interesting tale she has ever woven.
They cross the junkyard. Bianca dies for a figurine of Zeus, and Perseus wants to scream at the skies for the injustice. He isn't close to Bianca, he won't miss her, but he blames himself.
What if he was good enough at shadow traveling to take all of them away? What if he was able to kill Talos before? If he saw the figurine in her hand, if he was clearer in his warning, if, if, if.
He is a son of Hades, and death follows him. The stench of it grabs at his clothes, but he doesn't cry. Bianca is not the first to die in the name of the gods - she won't be the last one.
Perseus tries and tries to reach for any part of her body - everything is gone.
The Hoover Dam goes exactly the same way - Percy finds the mortal girl cute, but he doesn't ponder on it. It's not the time. He tells her his name is Percy, because why not. He is not seeing her again.
He laughs at the dam joke and feels a little freer. He cares about Zoe. It's difficult not to.
They fly away, and Perseus doesn't like it, but he barely flinches.
They get closer - all of them. Perseus always makes friends in quests, and he is happier for it.
Thalia catches Nereus - and she tells them all about Bessie, the ophiotaurus. Percy thinks that, for a serpent cow, it's pretty cute.
Grover leaves with it back to Camp Half-Blood and away from the temptation that Thalia feels. He knows it - he feels it too, deep inside of him, the urge to kill all of them.
But is Kronos any better?
They meet Annabeth's father. Her stepmom caught a glance at him and sneers like he is covered in blood.
Luke is in Mount Othrys. Percy doesn't join him. He wants to. The drachma is still in his pocket. But Luke needs to pay for what he has done to Annabeth. This is not about the war that looms on the horizon, this is about his best friend.
They fight. Perseus holds the sky, but the thing in his fingertips is not the earth, it's something older and harder, that presses him to his knees. He draws strength from the earth, and he holds on.
They win, but at what cost? Luke falls. He cries and throws the drachma over the cliff - a promise gone with one of his first friends.
Zoe is dead. Three people dead, for a goddess who couldn't care less about them. Perseus wants to go back in time and accept Luke's proposal.
He wants to cry and he doesn't. They go to Olympus. Thalia joins Artemis, and he feels betrayed: just because she is afraid of power, she is going to throw the weight of this prophecy on him?
And on top, she just joined the eternal misandry group, and something in his heart festers. He thought he had one more friend in her, but she was just another pawn.
Annabeth basks in her mother's praise. He wants to vomit - two people are dead, but who cares.
Thalia pleads for the ophiotaurus life, but she doesn't lift a finger when they talk about his death. He hates her. He holds a grudge for his cousin just like his father holds one for his brother.
He just saved their asses for the third time, and they're talking about murdering him because he might not save them a fourth.
The gods. They take and they take and they take and the demigods keep giving.
His father saves him - no one dares to go against Hades' vote to let him live, because he is a hero.
They go back to camp, and Perseus is charged with the task to tell Nico.
"Well, so bring her back"
The boy says it non-chanlantly like he is counting on it. Percy feels guilt creep at his heart like a plague, all the ways he failed to save Bianca. If he just had a better grasp in his powers, if he was just better. And here it was, something else he couldn't do.
"I can't, Nico"
Nico yells at him. He screams that he killed his sister. Percy starts to retract, and they end up in the pavilion. Everyone is there, and they don't lift a finger to help.
Percy is so tired. He hasn't seen his mom since October. He just lost one of his best friends. He was on a mission for a week. He held the sky in his hands. Zoe is dead. Thalia is gone. Death follows him. The guilt claws at him - for not being enough.
Nico shouts and shouts. The final straw is when he says that he shouldn't have trusted a son of Hades, how everyone told him not to. He tells no one wants him here, and before anyone can say anything to contest it, spartoi appear.
People scramble for their weapons, but Percy opens the ground and swallows all of the skeletons. When they're gone, so is Percy.
Turns out? Percy doesn't want to be here anymore either.
Nico is prideful. People in camp scrambled for his attention. A couple of kids of Aphrodite tell him that Perseus wasn't a good company, trying to get in his good graces. This time around, there's no one to sing the praises of Percy Jackson.
Grover takes him aside and explains, a little against him own will, what happened with Bianca. He gives him the figurine.
Nico feels guilty. He is too prideful to admit, but he feels it burning in his heart - so he tries to understand what he just did. Grover tells him about the last two years. The guilt now fights with admiration, and resentment battles with adoration.
Some people steer clear of him for a while. Charles Beckendorf is too kind to isolate him - but Nico sees the sadness in his eyes. Annabeth doesn't talk with him - she just lost three best friends in a swoop. Grover reluctantly tells him more about Percy. Clarisse wipes the floor with him - and he doesn't complain when he wakes up and his makeshift bed in Cabin 1 is crawling with bugs - He is pretty sure Connor hates him.
Katie Gardner doesn't talk to him anymore. Will Solace - who is his best friend - consolates him. He tells Nico he was pretty awful to Percy last summer, and Percy still came back.
Pretty awful doesn't even begin to cover what Nico did. But he nods and settles. It's going to be fine.
Perseus wanders the Underworld. He plays with Cerberus, and it's finally time to go make peace with his father and meet Persephone.
There's the heavy weight of a drachma in his pocket.

“what a pathetic weapon” akutagawa deadpans, shoving his hands into the pockets of his coat. “no pea shooter is going to have an effect on her” he emphasizes the last word, her, motioning to rashomon who seemed to have a mind of its own just like demon snow. just as rashomon struts in, you felt demon snow’s presence behind you.
before anyone could attack, the weretiger has pounced on rashomon, sending it to the other side of the street. “how amusing.” akutagawa comments, “let’s see who comes out on top” an amused smile on his face watching his ability take on his proclaimed enemy’s ability.
“now isn’t the time for that!” atsushi interjects. as the two was about to start bickering in the middle of an ability battle, demon snow takes this chance to make a move on you. you easily blocked her katana with your knife just in time.
“there should be a secret passage nearby for the mafia brass!” you managed to let out. akutagawa scowls, knowing you were right. “tsk. let’s go, jinko” he calls out to atsushi as he runs towards the restaurant. atsushi looked like he was deep in thought. whether or not to follow akutagawa or help you with fighting your own ability.
“hey-” “just go! i’ll be there, i promise!” you cut him off, knowing how long he decides to make a decision. you manage to shove demon snow far back but she was quick on her feet. “all right..” atsushi then follows akutagawa.
you bought yourself some time after sending demon snow flying. you immediately run towards the restaurant that had a secret passage and swiftly maneuver around the bar, barely managing to get inside the elevator and just before demon snow could get you, the doors closed.
“phew” you huff, catching your breath. “tsk, how weak” you hear akutagawa comment. the air was thick and stuffy. it’s almost like you couldn’t breathe. it was pitch black in the box too, making the situation far more worse for you and akutagawa. you wanted to avoid him as soon as possible but with the given situation, you can’t.
“this emergency passage was built in case for a gifted attack. the fog won’t reach us here” akutagawa states. hearing his voice again sorta made your heart ache. you truly missed him being around you at all times.
“what is that fog?” atsushi asked. “dragon’s breath” you hear akutagawa reply.  you focused your attention on the buttons in front of you, not wanting to hear anything. trying to clear your head and getting a hold of yourself. you’re not gonna let some stupid boy change that. your mission is how to get your ability back and that was it.
“y/n,” akutagawa calls. you felt your breath hitch hearing your name slip off his tongue like that. it felt like home to you almost. “with neither of us having abilities, you could finally kill me just like what you said that night” he says. emphasizing on the word ‘that’; reminding you of that painful night you’re sure you’ll never forget.
the night you two broke things off. the night you never thought would come in a million years.
you didn’t utter a word and continued to stare at the buttons in front of you. akutagawa tilts his head to the side “what’s wrong?” he taunts. “don’t you have a score to settle with me?” his words laced in venom but you knew better. he was testing you. he was testing if you had the guts to kill him.
atsushi scoffs, “y/n-chan doesn’t think of you anymore!” he butts in. akutagawa felt his heart drop when atsushi mentioned that. ‘have you moved on from me?’ was a question that asks himself repeatedly. his feeling of hurt instantly changed into anger. how dare this nobody speak for you.
“want to end this while we don’t have our abilities?” akutagawa challenges him. “stop right there” you interrupt the two boys, standing in between the two of them so they don’t start lashing out. you sent a look at atsushi before turning to akutagawa. “cut to the chase. do you know how to get our abilities back?”
akutagawa lets out a chuckle. ‘what was so funny?’ you thought to yourself. “that’s the first thing you say to me in months?” he then clears his throat once more, “but yeah. i know a way”
“what is it?” atsushi exclaims once more. “defeat the ability, it would come back to the owner” akutagawa shrugs. he looks at you then to atsushi, “are you that uninformed?” he rolls his eyes. you stare at his face for a bit. your heart racing as it seems like all your memories with him are crashing down on you. did you miss him this much?
“what is your plan?” atsushi’s question bringing you back to reality. “the same as ours” you respond knowing akutagawa well. akutagawa hums, “i’m going to shred shibusawa’s organs and end his life” akutagawa swears. “why? is there any other way to save yokohama?” he asks the question towards atsushi.
“we won’t kill!” atsushi declares. “that’s not what the armed detective agency does” he continued. akutagawa lets out a sarcastic laugh. “how funny.” he laughs, “you really are something, jinko”
“y/n understands what this job is all about” akutagawa suddenly looks at you. you two make eye contact and for a second there, you see his eyes soften at the sight of you. you quickly look away to hide the blush that was now forming on your cheeks. “she’s a former port mafia, after all” he sighs, remembering his golden days shared with you.
“i left the mafia to see the light of day, we talked about this already” you spoke, “i left the mafia to join the agency” you take a deep breath before looking at atsushi dead in the eye. “but the mafia killings are different from the agency’s. there’s a difference” you say.
akutagawa can’t help but smirk a little at your statement. knowing you were at his side rather than his enemy and your colleague. “y/n-chan…” atsushi stares at you in disbelief. “this wouldn’t have happened if dazai-san didn’t join the enemy side” akutagawa claims, “i’ll be the one to kill him.”
atsushi yanks out his gun and aims it at akutagawa. you don’t know what came over you but in one swift move, you jumped right in front of your ex boyfriend, shielding him from atsushi. akutagawa stares at you for a moment. ‘you still haven’t changed one bit’ he thinks to himself.
“i’m not letting you kill dazai-san!” atsushi yells. “and i’m not letting you kill him either” you snap back at atsushi. “y/n-chan.. why?” atsushi questions. from behind, akutagawa smiles and he was almost ready to hug you right there. “just.. don’t kill him. that’s my job” you dismissed.
before atsushi could say anything the elevator doors opened. akutagawa moves around you, not missing the chance to at least touch you in any shape possible. his touches still have that lingering feel to it and leaves you behind with atsushi in the elevator. “we’re not going with you” atsushi claims.
akutagawa doesn’t say anything and walks towards more into the darkness. the elevator dings, ready to close the doors when you put your hand over it and rush to akutagawa. “i’m going with him” you tell atsushi. “eh?!”
in the end atsushi tags along with you. you walked beside akutagawa with atsushi trailing behind you. “y/n-chan, why are you following him..” you hear atsushi dread . “it’s simple. he has information” you look back at atsushi, “he’s a powerful asset and we both have the same goal” you say, turning your attention to akutagawa.
akutagawa watches you from his peripheral vision before noticing the familiar cellphone dangling on your neck. “you still have that cellphone your mother gave to you?” he asked. you don’t say anything and walked faster. “mother?” you hear atsushi ask.
akutagawa stops in his tracks and faces atsushi, “you haven’t even been told about that?” rolling his eyes, akutagawa turns his attention back to you. “oy, wait for me” he calls to you, picking up his pace to walk next to you. atsushi can only stare at the two of you with a million thoughts running in his head.
“what was the shortest route again?” you ask akutagawa beside you. “0505” he answers back. you hummed and continued to walk beside him. “i see you still haven’t changed” akutagawa starts, “i figured you would be an entirely different person by now” he shrugs. you bit your lip, not knowing how to respond. “you’re still the same y/n i know” you hear him utter under his breath.
“that’s cause i still have unfinished business with you” you blurt out. unable to hide the truth anymore. you wanted him back more than ever and meeting him again just proves it.
akutagawa shuffles closer to you and grabs your hand. “when this fiasco is over, how about we try again?” he proposes quietly. only loud enough for you to hear. you squeezed his hand, a tiny gesture that means a thousand words and makes his heart race over and over again.

ghosts ch. 1
They were both broken people. Broken people didn’t fix each other, as the pieces would never quite perfectly together. But they understood each other. They were able to see the beauty within one other of being incomplete. --
fall, 1870. The Boshin War is over. Yukimura Chizuru returns to her childhood home in Tokyo to learn how to live again. Nagakura Shinpachi has escaped with his life under a new name.
The world is cruel, but it works in mysterious ways to bring their paths together again.
(aka a hakuoki fanfic | shinpachi x chizuru centric; post hijikata bad end)

— one.
“Ow!”
The clay of the teacup burned hot, much hotter than Chizuru had expected, and her fingers instinctively drew away from the heat. The cup slipped from her grasp and smashed into scattered shards onto the ground, the oolong tea that had once been contained forming little rivers in-between the cracks of the stone pavement. A few droplets beaded onto her kimono, but she quickly brushed them away with the back of her hand; she had washed all of her silks just yesterday, and she hardly wanted to have this one stain.
She sighed. It was probably her twentieth sigh of the day so far, and the sun had just barely moved into the sky. Every time she let out another heavy breath, she could almost hear Okita’s voice teasing her—What are you sighing for, Chizuru-chan? Don’t you know that I might have to kill you for looking so unhappy?
But he wasn’t here, and neither were any of her old friends.
Chizuru was alone, and lost.
Stop, Chizuru. Don’t think like that. Negativity was no stranger to her now. She could barely even go through the motions of her daily tea routine without thoughts and voices from the past lingering in the back of her mind.
Each morning she woke up to felt like night, a darkness shrouding over mind like the shadows of the weeping willows in Kyoto. Heavy as it was, she still forced herself to get up from her futon and face each day. She had to live, because as much as she sometimes wished that it was all but a dream, it was reality. She had to live, for those who didn’t.
You have to live, like they wanted you to.
She reached for the broken pieces of the clay cup, but a jagged piece slipped through her palm and slashed through the skin. Chizuru let out an instinctive gasp in pain and dropped the broken pottery again, watching as the blood welled from her hand and dripped over her arm. The bright red droplets struck her with a sense of deja vu, and suddenly she was transported back years before. There she was in front of the well at the Shinsengumi compound washing dishes when she had cut her finger in a similar way, and Heisuke, Heisuke-kun, had been confronted with his Rasetsu bloodlust for the first time.
But it didn’t just stop there. The sight and smell of her blood continued to reveal a torrent of memories that washed over her with a vivid brightness—memories that she had been trying to repress every day. That alley in Kyoto during a snowfall, the smell of blood and the high-pitched laughter of a monster in the air. The brilliant scarlet that seemed to flood the streets of Kyoto after Kinmon no Hen, mixed with the smell of smoke and ash from the fires.
That flowering cherry blossom tree in Hakodate, the spiderweb of blood across her hand transforming into a river that flowed into the ground from a man’s body.
“Look, Hijikata-san. It’s the Flag of Sincerity that everyone worked so hard to raise.”
She had no idea how long she stayed under that beautiful, cursed cherry blossom tree. Seconds, minutes, hours—time meant nothing to her anymore. The only thing that she knew of was that at that moment, he was gone. As the war raged on, Chizuru had felt herself becoming alarmingly numb to loss. She had become almost accustomed to seeing the dead lay on the ground through each city they trekked through, and the snippets of conversations she overheard no shook her like they used to. A hundred of our men, lost at Bonari Pass seemed like normal war talk now. But being surrounded by death and devastation didn’t make it any easier though. Losing her father, her friends, and her family had pierced through her heart, and she couldn’t think of a night that she hadn’t cried herself to sleep for the past few months.
Losing Heisuke and Sannan had broken her for days—she still felt partially responsible for the creation of the Ochimizu, and it pained her to know that she would never laugh with Heisuke again, or see Sannan’s cunning smile. Okita and Kondou had felt like some kind of sick joke from God, the two of them leaving this world in ways that were unfit for the two strongest warriors she knew. Harada, the man who had a spirit so loud and noble that somehow could make everyone smile, was now someone she would never hear from again. Every one of her friends’ deaths wrecked her heart open in ways that she didn’t know it could bleed. But losing him was different. She had held Hijikata’s body in her arms long after his eyes closed and the last traces of warmth left him, her tears dripping endlessly down her cheeks and onto his bloodied uniform.
She didn’t know what to do without him.
For the past five years, he had been a constant presence in her life. Chizuru had first come to depend on him for protection and stability; to the girl that had somehow landed into the Shinsengumi headquarters, Hijikata had been downright scary. His steely violet eyes seemed to read straight through her every time he caught her outside of her room, and she felt secondhand fear every time that she saw the way that he tolerated no sort of disobedience from his soldiers and punished those who strayed from the Shinsengumi’s code with injury or worse. But then as those first few months somehow stretched into years, Chizuru’s fear slowly faded and her days and memories began to fill with so many other emotions and experiences with Hijikata. Even though she spent her days with all of the different captains of the Shinsengumi, it was somehow always Hijikata that was by her side when she needed it the most.
Hijikata, who had shielded and fought against Kazama for her, his arm wrapped around her and her kodachi in the other. Hijikata, who was uncharacteristically fussy about his long, beautiful jet-black hair, and had yet allowed her to comb and tie it back while he had worked. Hijikata, who secretly wrote poetry with a smile on his face when no one was looking. Hijikata, who had taken her to a restaurant after a festival in Kyoto, and had paid for what was a surprisingly luxurious meal for what he had gruffly described as “just a thank you, you’ve been a big help”.
Hijikata, who had drank the Ochimizu that her father had created, and gave up his humanity to protect her from Kazama and to stand up for his values.
Their initial relationship as a page and superior had been awkward at best, and trust had been slow to develop. But after 5 years, the realization came to her so suddenly that she had almost fallen over herself: she was in deeply love with him. Her heart ached to always be near him and she loved to hear her name roll off his tongue—secretly, she thought that sounded more beautiful than she had ever heard it said. Chizuru had never had anything more than innocent crushes and dates when she had lived with Kodo in Edo, but her emotions and heart felt so strongly towards this person that she was certain that this was love, and a love that she knew would not come easily.
And of course it didn’t, because the man her heart had fallen in love with was like a force of a demon himself. Demon Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizou. Hijikata Toshizou, who was feared but adored by equally as many. Hijikata who was the talk of the town at times, with his long black hair that he refused to cut and high cheekbones that seemed to only accentuate his piercing gaze. Chizuru knew that he was a handsome man, some even saying he looked as if he had walked out of a wood-block painting, but she found more merit in the Hijikata she knew. His dedication, his resilience, his loyalty, and his love ran deeper than anyone else would ever know.
He had chosen her. And then he had left her.
Memories and concern for Hijikata filled her mind and thoughts endlessly for the months she stayed by herself alone in Sendai. She knew that he had left her in Sendai for her own safety; a young woman had no place in a war after all, but it was maddening. Chizuru knew she was no good on the battlefield and defenseless against a gun, but being left behind crushed her more than she could have ever imagined. She had no idea if she would ever see him again—dead or alive. What had happened to Kondou was something she very well knew could be something that could happen to Hijikata. But once she received the letter from Ootori, she had hastened to Ezo with her heart thudding in her chest with every thought that she was one step closer to seeing Hijikata again. No matter the hurt and pain that lay ahead of them, she knew that she had to be by his side.
And it had been so worth it. For a few months, despite knowing the pain and suffering that lay ahead of them, she had been happier than ever, just to be by his side. From the moment of their reunion, Chizuru was able to see his actions and words in so much more clarity. The bitter hoarseness in his voice when he yelled at his troops was not conveying anger, but worry to please come back alive. His scowl on his face when he worked long nights was not just because he was frustrated to shoulder this burden, but because he didn’t want anyone else to take the fall for the secret messages he was sending. He was the strongest person she had ever met, yet also the kindest and gentlest at the same time as well. In those few short months, Chizuru witnessed all sides of Hijikata and learned just how soft his hands could be on her hair, or the warmth of his embrace during the occasional nights that he did not work until dawn and allowed her to stay in the room with him.
If she could shoulder some of his pain and suffering, Chizuru had thought, then that was enough purpose for her to keep existing. If her blood was truly as powerful as Sanan and Kodo had alluded, then she would use it all and anything else in her power to keep him alive.
But he was gone, and she had failed. Maybe he would survived if she let him drink her dry, but Hijikata Toshizou was never the kind of person who would save himself at the expense of someone else. Makoto, he would say. Sincerity, which was the foundation for the Shinsengumi’s core beliefs. One had to be sincere and true to himself as a warrior and as a man to the end. Hijikata Toshizou had chosen his path. He chose to use his remaining life force to protect her from Kazama, and protect the beliefs that he had loved and carried for so long. He had died a warrior, and she knew that the Shinsengumi and all that he had fought for was finally at rest with him as well.
The two of them had known that this was a possibility from the start; the war was drawing to a close, and they were fighting a losing battle in Hakodate. Chizuru knew from the way Hijikata shook with anger and pain his sleep, or the scowl on his face every time he walked into the room from another meeting. She had always had some hope that maybe, just maybe, they would prevail and the two of them would find a future together.
But there was no place in this world for the two of them.
In a rush of scattered cherry blossoms, another individual had appeared under the tree—Amagiri. Polite as always, the red-haired demon he had greeted her with a formal bow before speaking. Since Kazama had strayed from the way of a demon and had continued to meddle with humans against his Clan warnings, he no longer could be laid to rest with his ancestors. Amagiri had come to bury Kazama’s body—and if Chizuru would like, Hijikata as well. How Amagiri knew that Kazama had died was some Demon logic that Chizuru knew was simply beyond her, but in that moment, she had been oddly relieved. Chizuru had always been a sensible girl, and even in times of crisis, she had a way of forcing herself to function. Even though burying Hijikata was exactly the last thing she wanted at that very moment, this was war. If they did not bury him now, his body would be discovered by troops and dragged out as a trophy to mark the fall of the Shinsengumi. She would have rather herself die than allow that to happen, but there was no way that she alone could have ever found the strength, physical and emotional, to bury him.
So she had let Amagiri dig two graves underneath that beautiful cherry blossom tree to lay both Kazama and Hijikata to rest. At Chizuru’s request, Amagiri dug Hijikata’s grave on the other side of the tree, away from Kazama’s; she knew that he would abhor being buried directly next to the demon he had spent years fighting. She took her final last glance at the man she had loved in the earth—his eyes closed, dark hair framing his face, swords crossed over his body, looking more peaceful and well-rested than she had ever seen him—and then turned away, unable to look as Amagiri completed the burial process.
Chizuru had been so consumed with grief that what happened afterwards was a blur. When she admitted she didn’t have an idea of her next move, Amagiri had simply stated, “It would be unwise to allow a woman to travel alone.” He had accompanied her to Hakodate, where she collected the rest of their personal belongings and relayed the news of Hijikata’s passing to Ootori. They then traveled to Yase, where Osen had been waiting; news of Kazama’s battle against a fake Demon had spread fast in the Demon world, and she had immediately sought to take Chizuru under the protection of the Yase Demon Clan. Chizuru had little memory of the months she spent in Yase; she only remembered grief and sorrow. News of the defeat of the Shogunate army and the rise of the Meiji Restoration flitted into
the Demon village over the next few months, but none of it meant anything to Chizuru. Hijikata was gone. Okita was gone. Heisuke, Sannan, Kondou, Harada…her life as she had known it, and all the people that had made it were gone. She heard nothing about Saito and Nagakura, but it hurt too much to hope. But after a few months of moping and living like a shell, Chizuru decided that she wanted to return to her home in Edo—well, Tokyo, now. She still had a home there, after all, and as kind as Osen and the demon clan of Yase was, it was not her home. So after six long years, Chizuru had finally returned to the old house that she had used to live with her father. Kodo, the man she had thought was her father. It had taken her almost a full two weeks to clean out all of the dust and vermin that had accumulated in the space over almost half a decade, but she had never been one to shy away from hard work. Rather, she had thrown herself into it, desperate for something, anything to do, to keep her mind busy and away from her thoughts. What quite honestly should have been work for two or three, she had completed in an astonishingly short time.
Chizuru had cleaned and changed the house to be more of a modest one fit to her needs; she had sold away most of their belongings, and kept only the essentials of what she needed. In this exchange and cleanup, Chizuru had dug out her women's clothes, but quickly found that many of her old kimonos in her closet no longer fit her—and well, of course they didn’t. She had last been a growing sixteen-year-old girl the last time she had worn them, and now she was a twenty-one year old woman. The hems that had once grazed her feet were now hanging above the ankles, and the silk was tight around her new curves and defined muscle she had developed after years of patrolling and running around Kyoto.
It was a strange and painful reminder that so much had changed.
Crafty as she was, Chizuru had loosened the seams and sewn together some of the cloth to create a couple of kimonos that fit her, so she could finally retire her pale peach hakamashita and hakama into storage. How strange for her to finally fold and lay those clothes away, although quite honestly she should have reduced them to rags. The silk had been patched and restitched over and over with years of wear and tear, but part of herself could not simply bear to toss that part of her life away. Instead, she had neatly folded it up and placed it into a box, next to her tattered Western military uniform. Her kodachi was racked on display in the bedroom, close enough to where she could grab it, but Chizuru sorely hoped that she would never need to touch that blade again.
But what was she doing here in Tokyo? What would she be doing, for the rest of her life? She had no idea. Chizuru knew that her existence and troubles as a female Demon did not end with Kazama’s death; Osen had been sure to warn her of it, and had strongly cautioned her against returning to Tokyo alone. But despite the lack of a clear direction in her future, and the dangers of traveling and living alone, Chizuru knew that she needed some sort of normalcy. She didn't want to think of Demons, of Rasetsu, of Ochimizu, of war and blood and death—she wanted to grieve alone, quietly, away from all that had pained her.
She was here, living and trying to bury her past life behind, but it always seemed to follow her.
She was just here. Existing, living. Drinking tea on her front porch, although her current cup was now smashed to smithereens and the tea was seeping into the hardwood. That painful memory hung heavily on her heart, and she wiped away tears from her face with her unbloodied hand, although the wound was already well on its way to healing. Maybe she would go into the town today to get some new teacups along with her daily groceries for meals; she still had a hard time stomaching food at times, but Chizuru knew she needed to keep her strength up. She wanted to start a garden in the back as well, to save her coin for fresh vegetables for when she needed it. Ootori had paid her well for her time and escape, but she knew it wouldn’t last forever. At some point, she would need to recoup her finances and find work to sustain herself.
But for today, she wanted to be normal. As normal as she could be.
Live, Chizuru.
I am living, Hijikata-san.
Chizuru stood up and stepped outside, tilting her head up to the sky. A slight breeze fanned across her face, and she inhaled the air deep into her lungs. Even though it was well into fall, she thought for the briefest moment, she smelled the sweet scent of cherry blossoms. Maybe today would be a good day.

~~
“You will divide into three groups of your choosing. Although you don’t always get to choose who you work with, I would like to see how you young students create your own best possible team.” All Might continued to explain.
A couple of students already grouped together. You saw Uraraka, Midoriya, and Iida smile at each other as if already thinking about possible strategies in their head.
“For this game, your team will have 10 minutes to hide your flag on your part of the city. We have played this game before with only two groups, but adding a third team will help create confusion and randomness to the game.”
You looked toward the large city, wondering how you would be able to navigate something so big. You didn’t see any street signs, which meant you had to purely go off of image memory.
“After 10 minutes, an alarm will ring, and the game will begin. If a team collects all three flags and hold them for over 10 minutes, then the game ends. If this class struggles to finish the challenge, we will end the game early and determine a winner based on the strategies and abilities used.” All Might finished his speech and smiled at the class again. “So, please arrange your teams.”
You gulped. There was no way people would want to team up with you. They already knew everyone and you were the outsider. Not only that, but your power was not very offensive and wasn’t the best option for a game like this. You stood there, watching as groups formed. Your heart raced, wondering what team would have to take you after everyone decided.
Iida, Midriya, and Uraraka were practically attached at the hip as they joined Tsu and Tokoyami. You also saw Sero, Kirishima, and Kaminari walk up to Bakugou as if the team was destined from the beginning. Jirou and Mineta followed Momo onto a team with Shouto.
Everyone was forming teams so quickly and you stood, sweating and anxious. A few people smiled kindly at you, but you couldn’t get your nerves up to actually walk over and join them. Ashido had joined with Kirishima and Toru was finding a team with Orjirou which meant you couldn’t even cling to them considering they were so willing to separate.
However, just as you were about to give up hope on actually being chosen, Mina smiled at you and waved you over. “Y/N! Over here!”
You found the courage to walk over to her, surprised she actually called you over.
When you arrived, Mina began talking to the boys again. “Like I was saying, with Y/N being able to hear our thoughts, she can help us communicate. Bakugou always runs off on his own, not talking to anyone, but with Y/N, Bakugou can run around all he wants without fear of screwing us over.”
You were surprised how technical she was, seeing as she had always been more cheerful and almost ditzy in everyday activities.
“On top of that, if Y/N were to go after a flag, she could make all the opposing people just fall asleep!” Ashido added, getting excited at the idea.
Kaminari, Sero, and Kirishima all smiled and nodded to each other, also getting excited at the idea.
You smiled down to your feet, happy that Ashido was able to add you to a group. You looked up to see Ashido grabbing Aoyama and the boys smiling at you.
“Nice to see you again,” Kirishima greeted.
“Yeah,” You mumbled back.
Kaminari was next to greet you. He grabbed his hand, “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Kaminari Denki,” Kaminari kissed your hand and winked at you.
“I know.”
Everyone looked at you as the words slipped through your mouth. So far, the only people who knew you watched the sports festival were Mina and Toru. You didn’t know why it made you so nervous to tell the group of men surrounding you. Maybe it’s because Sero and Kaminari did so badly during their sparring rounds. I don’t want to embarrass them.
“I saw you at the sports festival. It’s pretty popular in America,” You mumbled a response to the confused looks. “But it’s nice to meet you too, Kaminari-san.” You responded, taking back your hand that was still holding. You weren’t one to touch people often because it was hard not to get a glimpse into their emotions and it felt invasive when they didn’t know.
And you were right, he did get embarrassed knowing you saw his fight against that girl.
Finally, Sero greeted you. He smiled brightly and waved. “Hi, Y/L/N-kun, I’m Sero Hanta, but I guess you know that from my horrible fight against Todoroki.” Sero chuckled at himself and scratched the back of his head, similarly to Kirishima from that morning.
“Hi, Sero-san,” You replied. “And don’t feel bad, Todoroki is very strong.”
Behind the three boys was Bakugou, who looked at you briefly before turning his head away to look into the sky. He was analyzing the city, trying to memorize every turn and any possible pattern.
With Aoyama, your team made seven. So, you and Ashido walked over to All Might where he had orange, green, and blue armbands and headbands, made to differentiate between the teams. You carried the orange bands back to the team, everyone put on a headband and an armband onto their left arm.
Orange meant that you would be in section three. Tape outlined the three sectors, so it was easy to make your way to the sector. Once you arrived, your flag was front and center. It was orange and placed in a stand that you could move.
“I think we should put the flag on top of the highest building. That way no one can surprise the people guarding it.” Kaminari spoke. Sero and Aoyama nodded in agreement
“If we put it up high, it will be easier to see from the other sectors,” Kirishima responded, looking up to which building would be the tallest.
“Hmm, well, where else could we put it?” Kaminari responded.
“Can we move the flag as we go?” You asked, looking at the city around you.
“I guess so,” Ashido responded. “All Might had never said anything about not being able to move it once you place it.”
“I think we should have a couple of people guard the flag towards the back, keeping it low to grab the least attention. Like, literally lay it on the ground and don’t even keep the stand because it’s useless if we are mobile. If it gets too crowded, you can call me for reinforcements. While waiting for us, go up to the skies and I’ll make my way back with whoever I can,” You spoke, looking around to see where to hide it initially. “Back there would be good.” You pointed at a spot with a wall and two buildings surrounding it.
“I like that idea,” Sero responded.
“Me too,” Kaminari added.
“Let’s do it, then,” Ashido commented. “How should we split up?”
“I can guard,” Kirishima said.
“So can I,” Sero started. “I can set up traps to catch people.”
“Mineta might have the same idea, so we need to watch out for him,” Bakugou mumbled, finally joining the group. “Aoyama, you should stay with them, guarding. Kirishima can block, and Sero can trap people so we need someone more offensive to stay behind. The rest of us will go together.”
“Who should we target first? Midoriya, right?” Kirishima asked.
“Let me think,” Bakugou mumbled. “Who is with Deku and who is with Half-and-Half?”
"Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Tsu, Tokoyami, Kota, and Sato are on a team. Shouto, Momo, Jirou, Hagakure, Ojirou, Mineta, and Shoji are on the other,” Aoyama responded.
Bakugou gave a confused look to Aoyama.
“Deku is with big eyes, speedy, frog girl, dark shadow, rock head, and sugar rush. Todoroki is with tall girl, earphones, invisible girl, tail guy, purple weirdo, and arm guy,” Kirishima responded with a sigh.
“Ahh,” Bakugou mumbled as he thought.
“Does he seriously not know anyone’s names?” You whispered to Ashido.
“He still calls me Pinky because he thinks Ashido Mina is too hard to remember,” She responded, rolling her black eyes in his direction.
When Bakugou started speaking again, you looked back at the temperamental blond. “I think Midoriya’s team will be harder to beat, depending on who is guarding. I think we could outsmart most people on Shouto’s team that would guard. I want to fight Deku, but I think he is gonna be going after flags. And it might be easier to take the flag from Shouto first. After we have his flag, we are going to be a bigger target and will need more people guarding.” Bakugou wasn’t really going anywhere with his analysis and he was more talking to himself than anyone else, but it was all incredibly well thought out. Everyone paid attention to him, waiting to see if he would create the perfect plan.
“So, we attack the blue team first then? Because it’s easier?” You asked, tired of waiting for Bakugou to come to a conclusion. You only had so much time before the game would start and you would hate to not even have a plan made up.
“No,” Kirishima responded. “Shouto’s Blue Team will be easier to defeat. With fewer people to attack, we can still defeat them. We will need more people defending against our flags once we have Deku’s.”
“Exactly,” Bakugou added. “It doesn’t really matter anyway though. We are going to win regardless because we have someone as great as me.” He smirked towards his team.
You could almost hear the crickets echoing in response to Bakugou’s confidence. It seemed like everyone was used to Bakugou acting like this in games and completely ignored it.
“Okay! Sero and Aoyama, let’s go get set up,” Kirishima spoke, disregarding Bakgou’s ego. Kirishima grabbed the flag and walked toward where you had originally pointed.
You, Ashido, Kaminari, and Bakugou made your way towards the Green Sector. Bakugou flew up to fly across the buildings and get a better look. Ashido slid around, leaving slippery acid in her wake. You and Kaminari casually walked and chatted up a plan on how to split up as you made your way to the line. You pulled out your earbuds and placed them into a secure pocket on your belt.
You wished you could use your knives and swords, but tried to forget about it. You needed to learn how to only use your quirk anyways. The weapons helped, but they didn’t help you and your quirk get better. Maybe I should remove the sword from my costume and just keep the daggers and boots for now. That way I can’t just rely on it during my fights.
You four hung out around the barrier for a few minutes until the round started. Ashido and Kaminari chatted with each other while Bakugou perched himself onto a building to get a better look at the city. You kept to yourself during this time, instead of listening to Bakugou’s thoughts. You were sure he was going to run off as soon as the timer went off and knew you needed to listen to his thoughts to keep your team together.
Bakugou jumped down from the building and landed in front of you. Can you hear me? He asked you.
You nodded in response.
Honestly, you were shocked and trying your best not to look scared at his sudden appearance. You still weren’t over what happened a couple of days ago and it made you even more nervous than he seemed to not even remember, or maybe care.
Good. You need to trust me in this battle, okay? You can’t talk back to me if we are far away so I may just need you to do as I say.
“What if your plan isn’t good?” You responded. Bakugou may make you nervous, but you still wanted to win.
“Hey! Shut up, idiot! Of course, I’m going to have a good plan!” Bakugou glared at you. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair as he saw your skeptical face. “I want to win just as much as you. If not more. I’m not going to sabotage us.”
“Fine, but I’m not just going to blindly trust you. Don’t run off too far, okay?” You responded.
Bakugou didn’t respond, he just grunted at you, turned away and used his explosions to push himself back up the building.
When the buzzer went off, Bakugou and Mina pushed ahead, going in opposite directions to look for the Green Teams flag. They were much faster and could cover more ground than you and Kaminari who followed behind, running together. Once the flag was located, presumably by Ashido or Bakugou, they would tell you and you and Kaminari would follow them. Then you would use Kaminari to create a big enough reaction to attract whoever was missing.
You and Kaminari ran through the city, staying towards the middle to cover as much ground as possible. You looked down each street, trying your best to see anything that seemed off or weird.
The first thing you saw was Iida running down a few streets down towards the Blue Team’s sector. It was only for a second, but you knew it was him and you were relieved to know that they weren’t targeting your team. Unless they were splitting up.
You focused your mind to hear the thoughts of those close to you. Mina and Bakugou hadn’t seen anything yet. You heard Uraraka, Tsu, Koda, and Sato thinking about their flag and realized they must be guarding it. They have more guards than you guys set up. Worst of all, you didn’t know that much about anyone’s quirks, excluding Uraraka who you saw fight in the sports festival.
“Kaminari, I think the flag is in the sky. Uraraka is guarding it, she probably put it all the way in the sky. Even if we find them, we might not be able to find the flag,” You spoke, regulating your breath while running through the streets.
“You serious? You could at least use your quirk to hear their thoughts if they think about where they put it.” Kaminari responded.
“Yeah, hopefully.” You both went silent again. You tried to focus harder to hear others' thoughts. Your suspicions about Midoriya’s team targeting Shouto’s team first were right. You heard them thinking about how to beat certain people on the Blue Team. However, something that confused you was when you heard Ojirou.
Ojirou was on the Blue Team, but your radar of thoughts only went to the Green Sector and Kirishima in the Orange Sector. That meant that Shouto’s team was also going for Midoriya’s team.
Shit. You really wished you could share your own thoughts with others.
“The Blue Team is also targeting the Green Team,” You told Kaminari. He looked towards you and nodded, noticeably more panicked than before.
“Can you tell who from the Blue Team is here?” He asked you.
“Gimme a second,” You mumbled, concentrating on distinguishing all the voices you were hearing. Although the voices flowed naturally into your mind, it was more work to keep certain voices out, create ranges, and distinguish voices when you couldn’t currently see them. “It’s Ojirou, Hagakure, Todoroki, and Shoji.”
“So they are probably going to use Ojirou and Hagakure’s quietness to try and sneak it away while Shoji’s and Todoroki’s power distracts everyone,” Kaminari responded.
Honestly, you were quite surprised by his analysis, especially considering he didn’t come across as very intelligent. Nevertheless, he knew these people better than you and probably learned their strategies from other Hero Course Days.
“I can use my hearing to locate Ojirou and Hagakure to take them out, but this fight may come down to just pure power,” You mumbled. Fear started coursing through your veins, worried that Todoroki’s power might take you out. He was so strong and his long-range attacks in the festival were faster than you could predict. Fighting him head-on might ruin you. You couldn’t get close to him at all. There wasn’t anyone else who could refrain from close combat.
Just then, a green blur hopped across the street a block down from you. Both you and Kaminari stopped in your tracks, worried that the green blur might attack.
Just as we predicted, ribbit. Both the Blue and Orange Teams are targeting us. It will be difficult to defeat two teams. I should go get Midoriya or Tokoyami.
You couldn’t let her get more people. No way. You needed the Green Team to be as weak as possible. “We have to stop her,” You told Kaminari. “Follow me.” You ran after her as fast as you could. She wasn’t too far, but she was faster than you. “Kaminari, can you electrocute her?” You asked, as you both rounded the corner and her green image came into view.
He nodded and sped up just slightly. “My aim isn’t as good when I’m moving, but maybe I can trap her .” Kaminari bent down and glided his hands across the ground as he continued to run towards Tsu.
Tsu was completely unaware that you and Kaminari were following behind her. She wasn’t even hopping as fast as she could, making it easy for you to catch up. Maybe this would actually work.
“Electro-Trap!” Kaminari shouted. Sparks of electricity traveled through the ground towards Tsu. Once they caught up to her, the sparks shot up and surrounded Tsu at all angles. Kaminari stopped moving at this point but kept his hands on the ground. He couldn’t stabilize the move and had to constantly be producing electricity in order to keep her trapped.
Tsu stopped hopping just before she would have run into the electricity and stopped. Uh-oh, Tsu thought as she watched the moving electricity that surrounded her. Maybe I could shoot my tongue out to him. No, he’ll probably shock me if I shoot my tongue out.
You walked towards Tsu and stood just far enough away that you could dodge an attack from her. Her thoughts rushed over all her possible moves. Alas, she knew the moves would be fruitless considering you knew exactly what she would do.
As Tsu contemplated her next move, you debated how to finish Tsu off. Eventually, you decided it would be best for you to put her to sleep and for Kaminari to shock her, ensuring she would stay asleep.
You turned your back to the girl encased in electricity to make you way back to Kaminari and tell him your plan. “Listen, I’m gonna get closer and make her shoot her tongue at me. If I can grab it, I can make her fall asleep. Once she is defenseless, you need to shock her so she passes out,” You whispered, kneeling close to Kaminari, so Tsu couldn’t hear you.
Kaminari nodded in response. You stood back up and made your way towards Tsu. You stayed as focused as you could, knowing she might take this opportunity to attack, and her actions could be fast enough to catch you off-guard.
Her tongue shot at you when you were 10 meters away. It was quick and you only had a chance to dodge before she had to retract her tongue in fear that the cage would shock her. You walked closer to her and she shot again just a few seconds later. This time, you grabbed her tongue, but it slipped from your hand just before you could get a strong hold.
She’s trying to grab my tongue, Tsu thought as she stared at you. Should I stop shooting it at her? No, I need to grab her, it’s the only way to get Kaminari to release his trap.
At that moment, you realized that your powers would still work if she grabbed you with her tongue. Just as before, her tongue shot at you and you let the slimy muscle grab you, smirking to yourself. She purposefully didn’t bring you into the cage, too afraid to shock you, but the cage’s power stuttered for a moment and you looked back at Kaminari.
Oh my god, what do I do? I need to help her!
You winked at Kaminari.
What? What was that? God, I should just trust her.
“Tsu-chan,” You looked back at the girl who finally looked you in the face. “Sleep.” Her grip on you immediately faltered and she let you go. You only had a moment to get over to her and make sure to keep her sleeping. “Drop the trap!” You yelled to Kaminari as you rushed over to her sleeping form. Just as her eyes opened, you grabbed onto her shoulder and made her sleep once again. You waited as Kaminari rushed to your side. “Can you shock her just enough to make her pass out?” You asked him.
“Uh, yeah, I can. But you can’t be holding her or else I will shock you too,” Kaminari responded.
“Okay, I’ll let go and you shock her right after. Then we should put her in one of the buildings just to make sure she doesn’t wake up to a battle going on around her,” You said. Kaminari nodded and you let go of Tsu.
Kaminari touched Tsu and sent a shock through her body. She shook for a moment but then stilled. When Kaminari let go, you grabbed Tsu’s wrist and checked her pulse. It was slow, and she was already sleeping soundly. You motioned to Kaminari to pick her up by her feet. Right before you were going to pick up the small girl, a sound shocked you.
Towards your right, you heard the echo of Bakugou’s thoughts ringing in your ear.
Y/L/N! Get over here! I need back up.
Just then, an explosion rang out from the same direction you heard Bakugou’s thoughts coming from. A wall of ice shot up into the air right after the explosion.
“We need to hurry and get over there,” You told Kaminari. You both grabbed Tsu and moved her into the closest building, setting her down gently on the floor. Without speaking, you both began running towards the sound of explosions.
Where the fuck are you? Todoroki’s team is here and they teamed up with Deku’s team against me. That’s some fucking bullshit!
“Kaminari,” You spoke, grabbing his attention. “Bakugou says the two other groups are teaming up against him. Are you ready to fight?”
“Yeah,” He responded. He smirked at you and you heard his excited thoughts run through his head as a few sparks flew from his palms.
Within your head, you focused as hard as you could to locate Mina. She had noticed the explosions but wasn’t heading that way.
Y/L/N-kun, I’m not sure if you can hear me right now, so I will keep repeating myself. I found Uraraka and the flag. I’m sure Bakugou is in a fight right now. I don’t need help so just help him and I will let you know when I have the flag.
You stopped running just before you would have run into the battle. Your head hurt immensely after locating Mina. You never spent this much time focusing on using your telepathy to locate people and exclusively listen to only a few. Kaminari, who was trailing behind you, stopped next to you and looked at you with a questioning appearance.
You took a deep breath in and ignored the ache of your head. You moved in close to him, worried someone might hear, “Ashido found the flag, and she is nowhere near us. She just has to beat Uraraka.”
“What? That's amazing. Should we go kick some ass then?” Kaminari responded.
“Yeah,” You breathed out. Your tenfold emotions rushed through your body, tiredness, and excitement battling against each other. You tried to use the excitement to push you farther as you started running again, ready to face anything in your way. Your headache was no longer something you needed to focus on, this battle was more important.
You turned the corner to be greeted by the scene of an ice wall being exploded through only for the person exploding through the wall, Bakugou, to be greeted with a punch to the face.
He looked beat up.
Very beat up.
His hair was messier than usual and he had scratches littered across his body.
Most obvious though was the fact that some of his clothes were burned away. The sides of his pants were no longer there, something that probably happened when he used his explosions to fly up. His jacket was completely gone and there were burn marks that trailed from his wrist to shoulder. Most likely given to him by Todoroki.
He looked horrible.
And yet what you found most noticeable was the sweat dripping down the curves of his muscles. He was still standing even after being pounded on by multiple people. If anything, his thoughts showed you that he was more awake and more determined than ever.
That was something anyone could find incredibly attractive.
Goddamn . This guy is gonna be the end of me.
You spent a moment admiring his muscles and the way the black tank top clung to his sweaty skin. He looked past the people attacking him to see you. He smirked and wiped some blood from his split lip.
Finally, he thought. You grinned back at him, ready to pounce on the competitors.
However, instead of fighting the other teams, you watched as Bakugou’s eyes widened. He started sprinting towards you.
Move, move! You heard him. “Move you, idiot!” He said aloud, but you didn’t have enough time to process his words.
Your headache came rushing back, you presumed from all the thoughts surrounding you. You quickly realized that the headache wasn’t because of your quirk when everything went black and your body was slammed against a concrete building.

i listened to taylor swift and wanted to write a thing. woosang from ateez because their friendship is so precious!! this was written in like an hour. the grammar is bad and the tenses are alll over the place and theres nothing even resembling STRUCTURE but it’s 3am and i needed catharsis!
Wooyoung realises. Maybe a little bit too late.
the classic childhood best friends trope that i love because i think that the best kind of love develops slowly, and not all at once.
“The last time you saw me is still burned in the back of your mind”
Wooyoung glared at his phone, desperately wringing his hands together. pick up, pick up. fuck
the call went to voicemail. wooyoung dropped his face into his hands, pressing his palms into his eyes as hard as he could, breathing turning ragged. where are you where are you come back
he knew he had no right to demand anything at this point. this was his fault. but an eerily silent group chat sent chills down the back of his spine and left regret clawing at the back of his throat. i didn’t mean it.
he waited for a moment, then picked up his phone from the table. he scrolled down to his latest chat, rereading the messages that had already imprinted themselves onto the back of his eyelids, haunting him, taunting him.
me: god, san, please. just tell me where he is, if he’s alright.
san: it’s not my place to say anything. i can’t speak for him.
me: that’s bullshit. he’s avoiding me, not you. not all of you.
san: not the point
me: none of you are on my side.
san: how can we be? did you hear yourself last night, woo?
me: i get it i fucking get it. i was an asshole. i’m trying to make it right
san: i don’t know that you can.
the scene blazed across wooyoung’s memory, hot and painful. it was all clenched fists, parted lips and wide eyes full of-
of what, he didn’t even know. a mix of sadness, disappointment and regret.
the worst part was the lack of anger. his best friend had a temper shorter than anyone else he had ever met, but anger was easy. anger could be dispelled with time, breathing, and wooyoung’s self proclaimed irresistible charm.
wooyoung got scared when he saw emotions he didn’t recognise, not even after 10 years of friendship.
and because wooyoung was a coward, he pretended that he couldn’t see, and let his best friend walk out his front door to god knows where. that was a week ago. and in the span of that week, wooyoung spiralled. he was grasping at straws, trying to fix the situation.
nothing worked. his best friend had wiped himself off social media and gone radio silent on every messaging app. the number that he memorised like the back of his hand went straight to voicemail, every single time. the worst part was his house. it felt cold and barren, without the familiar voice trailing from the living room when wooyoung woke up.
wooyoung was missing something that he didn’t know he had.
“you gave me all your love and all i gave you was goodbye”
love.
wooyoung believed in love just as much as the next person. he was a clingy extrovert who thrived off attention. he had grown up with hugs and kisses from his mom, the occasional girlfriend, and hoards of his classmates in school that vied for his attention. jung wooyoung was the epitome of lovable.
jung wooyoung didn’t know how to love.
rather, he didn’t understand that love came in different forms. love could come from the most withdrawn, silent individual. you just needed to know where to look, beyond the physical affection and vocal admiration.
jung wooyoung couldn’t sense it.
not in the “tell me about your day” that always popped up when he ended dance practice at 8pm, exhausted and cranky but always ready to complain about every single thing that had ticked him off.
not in the magical cups of coffee that appeared on his school desk the day of exams, sometimes with a little post it note. “you got this”
not in the silent presence that was by his side watching him play video games with someone else. the presence that worked mutely in his kitchen, greeting wooyoung with a dinner that he never asked for, but was somehow always what he wanted. the presence that never uttered anything to ask for wooyoung’s attention, seemingly content with just being next to him.
jung wooyoung was a fool.
buried under his covers, he clamped his hands against his ears, pressing as hard as he could,as if he could drown out his own voice sounding in his mind.
are you out of your mind? he heard himself say, over and over again. this isn’t a good prank, man.
then silence. the silence that was always comfortable and reliable, suddenly turned suffocating and tense. it was as if a barrier had erected itself between him and the person he thought he knew like the back of his hand
again, those eyes. the eyes that conveyed everything his impassive face didn’t. shining with mirth when wooyoung lost a game, dripping with fondness when wooyoung danced on stage, blazing with irritation as he shoved wooyoung away from him if he was disturbing his studying.
blank, distant eyes. wooyoung felt his stomach drop, the same sensation that he felt
at that very moment, like he lost something very important that he couldn’t get back.
“so this is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying i’m sorry for that night.”
wooyoung had had enough. all his friends wouldn’t give him a straight answer to a very simple where is he?
wooyoung was nothing if not stubborn. he was going to find him, and fix everything. he didn’t know how, but he was going to do it.
frankly, it was almost a miracle that they hadn’t seen each other in two weeks, not even by accident. it was like he was going out of his way to avoid the places in campus that he knew wooyoung was going to be at, as if he memorised wooyoung’s timetable and classes and oh
he memorised wooyoung’s timetable, classes and practices. wooyoung stilled, feet stopping beside an empty classroom as he stared blankly at the empty hallway in front of him. classes were starting, and wooyoung was supposed to be in his European History lecture, but he literally could not care less about world war 2 at this moment.
how had he never noticed?
he was always slouched against a locker when wooyoung ended a 6pm economics lecture, whining for food and sleep. always outside the dance practice room hidden in a far block on campus at 10pm on fridays and sundays, with a bottle of water and wooyoung’s favourite ice cream. he always knew when wooyoung’s exams were, and made it a point to appear after every paper, ready to take wooyoung out for chicken. as a celebration if he did well, as a consolation if wooyoung was ready to burst into tears.
always there, without fail. it was the perfect summary of their friendship for the past decade, really.
and wooyoung would be damned if he let that slip through his fingers.
walking with a flame of newfound determination, he wandered through the school until he arrived outside the science labs. as an Arts student, he was never here. perhaps because he was never the one waiting. never reciprocating.
but the large white doors of the biology labs seemed daunting to him, even as he came to a halt in front of one with a plaque reading “anatomy lab”.
anatomy practical, 5pm. block D, level 3.
that was what he found after searching up the timetable of the medical students in his year.
the clock ticked closer to 630pm, when the class would be released. wooyoung tried to use the remaining moments to compose himself. he wasn’t going to throw a tantrum, he was here to apologise. he couldn’t start with why the fuck have you not talked to me in two weeks you bastard.
he wasn’t the bastard. wooyoung was. he was prepared to start with hey, i’m sorry. can we please talk?
but then the doors swung open, and students in lab coats filed past him. some looked at him curiously, and some waved, asking about a party happening this weekend. wooyoung just nodded and smiled, chest tightening, body bracing, like he was ready to be slapped.
and a metaphorical slap had never hurt as much before.
black nike shoes screeched to a halt metres away from him. the same worn shoes that had a permanent place in the shoe rack in front of wooyoung’s door.
wooyoung was staring, and he forgot how to speak.
he couldn’t recognise the person with swollen eyes and messy hair standing in front of him. his best friend was always impeccably neat, something that wooyoung constantly teased him about.
now, he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. maybe two weeks. he looked at wooyoung as if he was going to lunge forward and sock him in the stomach.he looked at wooyoung with fear.
his lips clamped shut, while wooyoung struggled to get out the words he practiced. “i-“
he ran. wooyoung could only watch as his best friend bolted past him, barely grazing his shoulder as he fled. it still felt like a slap to the face. wooyoung was rooted to the spot, his blood felt like lead, he couldn’t move-
“if you don’t go after him, i will personally destroy you.” seonghwa glared at him, taking the place of the boy that ran, but substantially closer to wooyoung. he poked a finger into wooyoung’s chest, sighing loudly.
“he refuses to leave his house except for class. he won’t talk to anyone. he won’t go for his drone flying club or whatever the fuck he participates in. he’s broken, wooyoung, and we can’t fix him.” only you can
“fix him. fix the both of you.”
“if we loved again, i swear i’d love you right.”
wooyoung stood outside apartment number 4B, and his heart ached at how familiar it was. he was always welcome, but now it felt as if it was an impenetrable fortress that would swallow him whole.
he had nothing. no food, which he always used to appease his best friend’s anger. because this wasn’t anger. no prepared acts of acting cute, because this wasn’t irritation. just his heart in his hands, ready to be bared and presented. perhaps as a gift, more likely as a sacrifice. it was a sacrifice he was willing to give up.
“i know you’re in there.”
nothing
“i didn’t come here to hurt you.”
quiet.
“please.”
all he could hear was the ringing in his ears.
wooyoung breathed in once, deep. “fine. it’s okay, i’ll talk from here. i’m just banking on the fact that you’ll hear me out. it doesn’t matter if you don’t respond.”
this was the hardest thing wooyoung had ever done.
“i’m sorry. i know that’s the most useless thing to say right now, but i have to. i’m sorry i acted that way after what you said. i was being a complete idiot, and a jerk. you know i am that way, but that doesn’t excuse it. i’m really, really sorry”
breath two
“i miss you. it’s honestly been hell, these two weeks. my apartment’s a mess. all i’ve been eating is instant food, and honestly i couldn’t give a shit about all the tests we have right now. it’s always silent in there. i can’t blame all the guys for ignoring me, i deserve it, but it’s just- it’s just hard. i got used to you always being there. and it’s like i can’t function when you’re not.”
breath three
“i know i’m being selfish. i’m starting to think that i’m inherently a bad person, because even now i’m still thinking about myself. seonghwa said you haven’t left your house, that you won’t do anything. i’m sorry. fuck, i really am. you shouldn’t do all that. you shouldn’t have to suffer, you didn’t do anything wrong. i’m the one that made the mistake. so please, come back. you don’t have to come back to me, but the guys. they’re worried. so am I, but i’m past the point of deserving anything from you.”
breath 4
“i couldn’t stop thinking about that night.” wooyoung dropped his gaze, even though the door remained resolutely shut
“i know you can’t either. fuck, i messed up. i didn’t mean any of that shit, i honestly don’t know why i said that. but i’ve been thinking about it. about you. i think about you a lot.”
here goes nothing
“you’re important to me. you’ve always been, since we were dumb kids fighting over a soccer ball in the school playground. and i think i just finally realised how, how much i started to rely on you. i need you. it’s like i can’t breathe without you, and i just realised because you were always there, and i didn’t know to miss you. fuck, i miss you. “
“i’m pathetic. i don’t know how to understand you like you understand me. i don’t know why you put up with me, i’d probably get tired of myself. but you do. and i-“
wooyoung struggled to get his bearings through the shaky breaths that come through his lips, eyes blurry. there’s so much he wants to say.
like how he finally understands the meaning behind every little action that he took for granted. how his eyes have finally opened to another way of communicating, of expressing care and concern.
i know. i know it’s your language, and i must have been fucking blind my whole life to miss it but please don’t stop talking to me i’m just starting to understand.
how he realises just how much his best friend means to him, right when he’s on the brink of losing him
“i get it now. you’ve always been too good for me. and i’m sorry it took this for me to see what was always in front of me”
wooyoung can be brave for once. wooyoung can be the one giving.
“and if the chain is on your door, i understand.”
three words. just three words.
“i love you.”
wooyoung shuts his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose in a bid to stop the hot tears. the door is still shut, and the silence is threatening to overwhelm him.
“i don’t expect you to accept that. i know i hurt you. but i had to come and say it. maybe this is me being selfish again.”
one last breath.
“but i swear on everything we’ve ever promised over the past 10 years. i mean it. yeosang, if you can hear me, i love you. i should’ve said it back that night, i don’t know why i didn’t, because now i look back and i think i must have loved you from the start.”
wooyoung blinked rapidly, and tilts his head upright to start at the block of mahogany in front of him.
“if you’re out of your mind, then i am too.” a wry smile found its way onto his lips as his mind replays a decade of laughter and memories, bitterly juxtaposed against the crippling loneliness and fear he feels right now. he’s going to walk away, and his best friend isn’t going to chase him.
“i’m gonna go now. i’m sorry, yeo. i won’t blame you for not believing me.”
but apparently jung wooyoung still doesn’t understand kang yeosang.
kang yeosang has never been able to push wooyoung away. not when they were 10, and definitely not when they’re 20.
someone grabbed the hood of his sweatshirt and yanked him back harshly. wooyoung stumbled, and his heart flipped in his chest. before he can comprehend anything, he’s being pinned against the mahogany door, but on the other side.
wooyoung loves yeosang’s eyes, because they burn with an intensity that is incomparable to anything else. wooyoung is still crying.
“if there’s one thing i hate about myself, it’s that i don’t know how to not love you, jung wooyoung.”
wooyoung thinks that he finally, finally, comprehends everything as yeosang crushes their bodies together in a semblance of a hug. but it’s tinged with desperation, and years of unspoken words and hidden actions. it’s the physical representation of please don’t leave me.
jung wooyoung is a fool. but he’s starting to learn.
lesson number 1: he’s in love with kang yeosang.

Studying (Tsukishima x Reader)
Title: Studying Ship: Tsukishima x Reader Word Count: 5,092 Summary: You are failing Calculus and your teacher recommends you to ask the only person in the class passing to tutor you. That person being Tsukishima Kei, the most unapproachable person ever. A/N: cross posted from my Wattpad!
There is no way you'll pass Calculus by the time you needed to take exams. Why did you even decide to take this class? It is an optional course because you are a second-year student, and yet you decided to torture yourself into enrolling in the difficult class.
There is only twelve students in the class, and nearly half of the students are failing and the other half are barely passing. Of course, the one exception to this ultimatum is Tsukishima Kei, the only other second-year in Suzuki-sensei's class. The brooding second-year squints and glares at anyone who came even ten feet within him. It is almost as if purple waves of gloominess surrounded the corner he sat in.
After class, Suzuki-sensei pulls you aside before you can exit the classroom. "(Y/N), can I speak to you?"
While you furrow your brows at him, you still comply, asking, "Yes, is something wrong?"
"Well, to be honest, your grades are not good. They are among the worst in the class."
"I know, I know," you say, running a hand through your hair. "I'll do better next test, I promise. Nothing to worry about then, sensei."
"But I want to make sure you are understanding the material correctly, so I'd like you to arrange a study session with Tsukishima," Suzuki-sensei proposes and your face nearly falls to the ground.
You begin to chuckle, but your teacher doesn't seem to feel the same way, so you straighten up. "Sensei, I don't know if you understand, but Tsukishima-san is hardly anyone's friend. He wouldn't agree, even if you gave him a million yen," you protest wholeheartedly.
"Why don't you just give it a try? If you have trouble approaching him and after you've tried, of course, let me know and I'll speak to him. You never know, you might just be surprised by what can happen." Suzuki-sensei sounds hopeful, but for what reason?
Damn him, Suzuki-sensei isn't taking no for an answer, you think to yourself. "Okay, I'll try my best, but I can't guarantee anything. Thank you for looking after me, sensei." You bow your body slightly forward to show respect. Not many teachers would go out of their way to arrange tutoring, or at least, arrange the initiation of tutoring.
"You're welcome, (Y/N). I suggest you go off now, try to find him before his practice begins." He shoos you off, flicking his hands into the direction of the door.
After another small bow, you head in the direction of the Karasuno volleyball gym, where the boys' volleyball team has played ever since Takeda-sensei became the faculty advisor for the group. You inch towards the covered area before the door and by now, you know it's better not to interrupt. Although your mind says no, your eyes can't help but to say yes. You're like a secret agent, peeking along the side of one of the doors, even though the other one is wide open.
"Kageyama!" A boy with a fiery set of locks yells and his cries bounce off the walls of the whole room. Up he goes, and you're actually nervous for him. The second boy pushes the ball up into the air and slam! The hand of the first boy knocks it down despite the people blocking him. The ball connects with the floor and is sent straight up into the air afterwards.
"All right!" The boy named Kageyama high-fives the redhead after their combination.
"Did you need something?" Someone's voice interrupts the focused aura. Their body disrupts your vision of the court.
"I-I'm sorry. I just wanted to see if Tsukishima was here and then I became amazed by all the playing." You shrink within yourself; the boy—no, that is a whole man—laughs and you can't help but to chuckle nervously along.
"You should have just come in. I wouldn't have noticed you otherwise." He motions a hand toward you and you make your way inside the gym, which looks much larger now that you're in it. "I'm Sawamura Daichi, one of the assistant coaches of the Karasuno volleyball team."
"It's nice to meet you Sawamura-san. My name is (Y/N) (L/N)." You tilt your head to the side. He has a familiar face, but you aren't sure if you recognized him from the team. "Didn't you play last year?"
"Yes, and now I'm in the university nearby, but when I have some free time, Coach Ukai uses me and Azumane-san to be extra authority, especially during the games."
"Ah..." You nod your head and lean back against the wooden paneling. You look at the scrimmage unfolding in silence, and Tsukishima plays every second of it until the bell blows for the teams to have a five minute break. The manager—Yachi, who is in the same class as you; unfortunately, she doesn't take Calculus though—passes out small towels and squirting water bottles.
You take this chance to approach Tsukishima, but again, the purple waves of gloominess surround him like a wall. You stutter-step backwards when someone jumps in front of you.
"Hi! I'm Hinata! Are you going to be one of our managers?" The redhead from before is now in your line of walking. He jumps out of his skin, noticing something you don't, at least right away. "Wait, you're taller than me! And you're, you're a girl!"
You rub the back of your neck, realizing that you see above his orange tips. You are just blessed to have taller parents, which is a little rare in the country of Japan, but aren't you glad for it? You are only an inch taller though. "Yeah, I am, but, er, I'm not going to be a manager. I just need to speak to Tsukishima."
That is one of the mistakes you made.
"Tsukishima!" Hinata screeches at the top of his lungs. It takes all the will of your being to not smack him because you don't know him like that. Is he a first-year? You haven't seen him around campus, though maybe that's because Karasuno is a large school and you mostly keep to your own class. Or maybe a talented primary student...
"Are you a primary student?" You ask.
That is your second mistake.
The whole team bursts into laughter and Hinata's face contorts into a series of frowns. "N-no! I'm a second-year! Like you! I'm just two classes below you!" He crosses his arms over his chest.
"I've never seen you before though..."
Suddenly, a dark presence creeps into your circle. You look up and shrink to Hinata's size.
"(Y/N)..." Tsukishima's voice lowers as he looks around in confusion.
You wave slightly, your hand retracting to your shoulder. You lead him to the side where no one can really see you. You are already bothering the team and preventing them from practice. "Uh, hi, Tsukishima." And so the word vomit commences and your stomach starts turning and at this point, you're saying whatever your mouth allows, "I don't really mean to interrupt you or anything, but Suzuki-sensei is asking if you could tutor me in Calculus since I'm," your voice drops to a whisper, "failing."
His whole composure changed. "Oh, are you now?" He cocks his eyebrow at you. This is the first time you've been close enough to even notice his eyes; they're golden-brown and a shine washes over them as the sunlight hits in the right place. You don't see that everyday. "Is he asking or are you asking?"
You mutter under your breath, "I'm asking."
"Sorry, I couldn't hear you." That smug shit-eating grin on his face is the most taunting thing you've ever seen. This is the most you've ever spoken to him and yet he acts as if you've been pals the whole time.
You roll your eyes and purse your lips into a thin line. You don't want to feed into his ego and that is never your intention. "Whatever. I'll talk to you later, you're busy now." You turn to leave and while your greatest fantasies overcame your brain, they never came to fruition. Nobody came after you, no one called your name.
So you keep going.
"Wait! (Y/N)!" Hinata calls after you. Of course, the kid that you offended comes after you but not the boy you actually needed to speak to. When he skids to a stop, just mere inches in front of you, he heaves a sigh while he presses his palms to his knees. Straightening up, he says, "Tsukki just doesn't understand. Sorry about him."
"It's okay, he's just dense. I just really need to talk to him about—"
"Oh, I get it!" Hinata jumps in place with a grin.
"You do?" You turn your head at the thought. Maybe he also needs help with his math homework.
"You want to confess to him!" The funny thing is that he says this without a lace of malice. Pure curiosity wipes over his face. He sure jumps to conclusions.
"I," you shake your head at the ground with a chuckle. You look back at him with a smile. "No, that's not it."
"Then what is it?" Hinata asks. He's a puppy, you think to yourself. Is he really in the same year as me?
You double-down for a boy you don't even know with a sigh. "I'm failing a class so I need him to tutor me."
His lips form an "o" as he bows from the waist. "Sorry for taking it out of context. Though, you know, Tsukki isn't really the best tutor to seek. Kageyama and I asked him for help last year and he, er, pooped?" Hinata shrugged his shoulders. "He pooped on us the whole time until we sought out Yachi-san."
"I see." You scratch your chin in thought, ignoring Hinata's substitution of words. "He's probably the only person I could ask for help, though. He's the only person in my class who is passing with an acceptable grade. At least that's what I assume, otherwise Suzuki-sensei wouldn't recommend him to me."
"I can talk to him for you!" Hinata speeds off back into the gym and you grab onto his wrist. His squirms in your grip.
"Hinata, please don't do that." After all, the boy with the golden eyes slithered his way into your heart at some point, despite his elusive nature. Perhaps you could take the time to confess to him, at some point.
"Okay, fine," he pouts with his bottom lip sticking out. "Would you like to stay for practice? Maybe you can become a manager after all, if Suzuki-sensei and Takeda-sensei allow for it. I miss having two managers. Our old one, Kiyoko-san, she was as tall as you..." While he steamrolls through, you nod and smile, even though you are not paying attention to him.
By the time you two are back, the team seems like they're in another game. "Hey, Hinata?" You tap his shoulder. "Are you guys just playing practice games?"
"For now, yeah! It's a good way to become better." Hinata bows to his coach for being gone for too long and before you know it, he introduces you to Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei. You bow to them and they offer for you to stand next to Yachi, who tells you more about the plays they are making.
"They all have little hand signals they've learned that they place behind their back to let the other players know what they expect to do," Yachi explains with a grin on her face. She looks elated that while she just became a manager last year, she is picking up the mechanics of the sport very well.
"I see." It feels like this nod has been wired into your brain, as it's one of hundreds of the day or week. "And how will they know which person will spike or attack?"
"That's what the practice is for: they'll figure out which combinations work out best! Between you and me," her voice lowers. "the team can get a little rough when Hinata and Kageyama are on separate sides of the court like they are for this set. They're both great, but they're even better together.
"I noticed that. And what about Tsukishima, what position does he play?"
"He's a middle blocker, like Hinata."
That statement shocks you. "But they're so drastically different in height!"
Yachi giggles at you. "You're right, (Y/N), but Hinata makes up for it in his jumps, for sure."
You grin, not knowing what else to say. Soon enough, the practice finishes with the students bowing to Takeda-sensei and Coach Ukai. For some reason, it doesn't surprise anybody that many of them stay after for more practice. After two hours of constant gameplay, they still want to work on their personal tricks? You silently commend them for that.
"(Y/N)," Tsukishima says as he sidles up right next to you, the sheen from his perspiration glistening on his forehead. "Can you wait for me so I can change and we can talk? I can bring you home."
Wow, this day is nothing short of surprises, but you manage to say, "Sure."
Hinata comes up to nudge you after Tsukishima heads off to the locker rooms. "I saw that, (Y/N)!"
"What?" The side of your eye makes contact with his and Hinata's face falls.
"You're just like him, oh my goodness. You two would be scary together."
You roll your eyes, showing off your toothy grin to ease the aura. "What were you going to say, Hinata?"
"I was going to say that I saw Tsukishima offer to bring you home and I've never seen him do that before with anyone. He usually walks with Yamaguchi-san before he goes off into his own direction." Hinata wiggles his eyebrows and teases, "You must be special then."
"Pfft, hardly," you comment. "Probably the opposite. Maybe he just wants to be nice because I stayed for the whole practice when I could have gone home." You attempt to rationalize the situation, but what Hinata's saying has some truth in it, you have to admit.
Not long after, Tsukishima guides you to leave as he arrives in his school uniform again with Somy headphones cradling his neck.
"You don't stay for more practice?" You ask, pointing back with your thumb toward the gym.
"Usually, I do." Tsukishima shrugs as you begin walking off the school campus. "Just not today."
"Er, why not?" You look up to him. He is half a foot taller than you, but it feels like a lot more. His gaze is even with some of the tree branches and you can bet that his long arms can reach even higher. "I live by Satō Park."
"I do too," he begins. "I didn't have a reason to stay today." So it isn't because he wanted to be kind and bring you home, but at least he was kind enough to bring you home.
After walking in silence, you bring up your Calculus problem. "Can I ask you to tutor me in your free time? Suzuki-sensei would like you to tutor me."
Tsukishima walks more, but he has a look of contemplation rather than seeming like he is purposefully ignoring you. "Why would he only ask you to be tutored, (Y/N)?" His question comes out all of a sudden.
"What do you mean?" Your eyebrows knit together. "He must have—"
"No one else approached me for tutoring, but I know I have the highest grade in the class. There's no doubt about that."
"Well, when you say it that way," you roll your eyes at his confidence. "I just don't understand why he would only ask me to ask you. It just doesn't make any sense."
"Eh, maybe it does in his head." Tsukishima rubs the back of his neck and looks off to the distance where the trees gather in one area. It seems like he was embarrassed by something? How odd, but you don't think too much of it. Looking back at you, not a single trace of emotion covers his face. "Anyway, I guess I can tutor you."
"Thank you!" You exclaim, stopping to squeeze your arms around him for a quick second before you realize what you were doing. "I'm sorry about that, Tsukishima-san. I didn't realize what I was doing."
He stands there, frozen. He glanced at your face and sizes you up from head to toe. "It's okay." He shoved his hands in his pockets and continued to move.
You need to rush forward to catch up with his darn long legs and when you do, you turn your head up at him. "Did I make you uncomfortable?"
"No," but Tsukishima has nothing else to say other than "Let me just bring you home."
You know that he doesn't want to speak anymore, but it really settles in when he places his headphones over his ears and you can even hear the music blasting despite the cushioning. So this is how it's going to end, you think. You'll just become his "student" and after you get better grades, he'll revert back to the menacing creature in the corner.
He brings you home, bowing to your mother after he apologizes for the fact you're home late, and placed his headphones back on his ears as if they never left that position.
"Who was he?" Your mother asks with a mischievous glint dancing across her eyes.
"Just a boy who'll help me with math."
Suzuki-sensei comes up to you early the next morning and wonders if you've spoken to Tsukishima about tutoring sessions.
"I have," you say and this brings a pleased smile to his face. "We'll start lessons soon," you keep talking to appease your teacher even though you and Tsukishima haven't decided anything yet.
"I'm glad to hear that, Ms. (L/N). Our next test will be next week on Wednesday. Hopefully I'll see an improvement!" Suzuki-sensei grins and sends you off on your way.
"Thank you," you skulk away without giving too much away. Is there much hope for even a passing grade in that class?
You find your way back to your seat and someone's already waiting there for you.
"Oh, Tsukishima, good morning." Your voice comes out as more of a whisper. "What are you doing here?"
He leans against the window, against the shining light, and you couldn't just not stare at him. He looks stunning in the sunlight. You wonder what he'd look like in the moonlight, how his features were probably even more accentuated then, probably.
"Let's set up a date for tutoring." He uses the word date, who uses that word for tutoring?!
"Uh, sure," you agree. "When's a good day for you? Suzuki-sensei told me our test will be on Wednesday of next week."
"If you can wait everyday after my practice, then we can do everyday." He seems eager even under his cool composure.
"I don't really think that's necessary." You find yourself laughing with a nervous edge. "I know I'm failing, but everyday is a lot. Plus, you could use that time to practice."
"If you're going to learn, you should at least learn all the way," Tsukishima debates with a look that screams isn't that obvious? It's a look that makes chills skip down your spine.
"Alright, then." You frown at the ground. "I'll watch your practices with Yachi-san then."
Tsukishima shrugs and nods, going back to his seat. Your gaze follows his every step, up until he matches your eyes when he slides into the chair. You drag your eyes to your bag, pulling things out to your desk. Jeez, only a day of fully speaking with him and he's already taking up every piece of my mind!
Each day goes by with you going to school, but life is a lot more livelier. For starters, Tsukishima actually speaks to you, even outside of tutoring. Yamaguchi and Tsukishima offer to have lunch with you on some days, although they just remain in the classroom until the lunch period is over.
At the end of practice on Monday, two days before the test, Tsukishima quickly gathers his things and heads off to the locker room without a word. Yamaguchi comes to your side and smiles. Now that you're noticing, his freckles are much more prominent the closer he comes toward you.
"Er, (Y/N)-san, I was wondering," he presses his fingers together and his smile disappears as he presses his lips into a line. "Would you be interested in becoming a manager for our team? You're here all the time, and since you don't do any other activity, I bet Yachi-san would appreciate your help."
"I want to," the words come from your mouth and even you're surprised to hear them. "I think it would be a great experience. I've enjoyed getting to know all of you even though I've only come to your practices a few times now."
Yamaguchi's worries dissipate. "That's, er, I'm glad to hear that," he finally says after finding the right words. "Tsukki will be happy to hear that."
"Oh, (Y/N), are you ready to go?" Tsukishima arrives with his bag in his hand and his headphones in its typical place.
"Yes." And so you and Tsukishima go in your merry way.
"What were you talking to Yamaguchi about?" For once, he actually pays attention to you and the fact that his golden gaze is on you flares your cheeks ever so slightly. You keep your eyes forward none the less.
"Yamaguchi suggested that I think about becoming a manager for the team if Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei allow for it. I already spend my time at your practice and Yachi-san has been teaching me a lot. Plus, I think Hinata wants to show me a few moves too." You look to what's ahead, the open road, an entire world of possibilities. "Of course, I can't do anything about it until I become academically stable."
"Right, of course." You can't help but to notice the slightest bit of discontent line his voice. "Well, let's do something about that then."
Tsukishima has been diligently training you on the formulas and problems that will appear on the next test. You have to admit, with the guided instruction, you no longer shy away when Tsukishima asks for an answer; you provide and justify. It gives you the most satisfying rush. You need to hope, however, that this confidence transcends to the actual exam because otherwise, you're screwed.
Each day, you have been alternating between your living rooms. Tsukishima's mother and brother are a spitting image of him, minus the glasses. His family is absolutely the kindest, which makes you wonder why he's so serious at school. He finds out that you're actually a quarter American, which contributes to your height as well as your excellent English skills. What he doesn't know is that your mom consistently asks why you two aren't dating after he takes his leave, whether that be from your house or from the doorstep after dropping you off.
"Mom!" You would gasp. "I've barely been talking to him for two weeks! He's been in my class but this really is the first time I've interacted with him."
"I see," your mom taps your nose. "Can't deny that your eyes give it all away. You don't have to even say anything to him. If he knows, then he'll be able to tell by your eyes."
What your mom said still shakes you to your core and it remains on repeat like a broken record in your head.
Tsukishima's touch on your shoulder brings you out of your thoughts and it's the first time you really stare into his eyes and his into yours. It's mesmerizing to say the least. You tear your eyes away and find something else to look at. "Did you listen to me, (Y/N)? I asked if you'd rather go to my house today. I remember you saying that your parents had an event going on."
"I completely forgot about that. Yeah, let's go to your house." You shake your head and allow Tsukishima to lead the way, but at this point, you could honestly lead your way there too.
At the door, Tsukishima's mom greeted you right away. "Ah, (Y/N)! Welcome!" She says as you take off your shoes. She is wearing an apron that looks very cute.
"Thank you for having me again, Tsukishima-san. I like your apron!" You compliment her and she appears ecstatic.
"Please call me Oba-san, (Y/N)!" Tsukishima's mom warmed up to you on the first day you came to study at their house and you always feel at home in their living space. "And thank you! Would you like to stay for dinner? I'm making curry tonight."
You would hate to turn down an invitation to eat, and you look to Tsukishima for some kind of answer but all he does is shrug. "It should be okay with my parents. I'll just let them know quickly." When you text your family group chat, all they do is respond with a thumbs-up emoji. "They said it's okay, Oba-san." The familiarity of the address sounds weird on your tongue but since his mom asked for her to call her that, you don't want to seem rude.
"(Y/N) and I are going to study now. Just let us know when dinner is." Tsukishima runs a hand through his hair and leads you to his room before his mom talks to you more.
"She's never usually like this. She wasn't even like this with my brother's girlfriends," Tsukishima sighs as he plops onto the ground.
"Why the change in setting?" You usually study in the living room, no matter whose house you go to. Your heart races as you step into the unknown; what will he say next? Is it something important?
"Oh, it's nothing," words rush out of his mouth. "Just, er, making sure that my mom doesn't bother us. Once she starts going, she won't stop. You already know."
"I get it. My mom only keeps to herself because I ask her to. She'd be like your mom too if I didn't say anything." You giggle as you pull out your notebook and set it to your right. "Let's start?"
"Before we start, I need to tell you something." Maybe this is the important thing!
"Yes?" You don't need a heart monitor to tell you that your heart is beating out of your chest.
Tsukishima rubs his hand over his lips and mutters something. His face blazes brighter than the sun.
"I couldn't hear you, Tsukishima."
"Damn it. It's fine. It's whatever, let's just start." Tsukishima takes his textbook out aggressively.
"No, it's not whatever. I just couldn't hear you, Tsukishima. I want to know what you were saying." For once in your life, you are firm in your stance, and no matter what he will say next, you try to steady your brain for it.
He shakes his head at the floor and keeps looking down. "I like you, (Y/N)," he whispers to the ground. It takes guts to admit something like that, especially for someone like him who is so hard inside.
"You, you do?" You decide to risk it and let your fingers run against his hand and the flecks in his eyes are visible once again. "I like you too. In that way."
Now it is his turn to repeat, "You do?" He cocks his head to the side. "Why?"
"What do you mean why? You're nice and kind to me. Ever since you walked me home after I stayed for your practice, I found myself tugging toward you," you brazenly admit. After all, since you've gotten the tough part out of the way, you might as well tell him how you feel all the way, right?
"Really?" Tsukishima still finds himself in disbelief and furrows his eyebrows. "That sounds impossible." He adjusts his glasses and shakes his head. He is so dense-headed for a person who is so intelligent.
"But it's true." You grin. "Was this why you wanted to study in your room instead?" You smirk at him and he looks so uneasy under your supervision.
"I mean, I guess." He shies away and he covers his mouth and turns the other way, but you can see his neck redden. How cute!
You sit there, not knowing what to do, and so you just smile. Maybe Suzuki-sensei had a point. You can always be surprised by anything. "Thanks for telling me, Tsukishima."
"You're welcome," he concludes after regaining his composure. "We could, we could, er..." He loses his train of thought. "We could make these study dates?"
"I'd like that a lot, actually. But we probably shouldn't tell our moms. They seem kind of obsessed. Sure as hell my mom is." You mumble the last sentence.
"What was the last thing you said?" He begins laughing and this is the first time you've seen him lower his guard fully.
"What, that our moms are obsessed?"
"No, not that. The last thing."
"Oh," you bow your head with your cheeks flaming up. "My mom asks why we haven't started dating because she can see it in my eyes that I like you."
"Wow." Tsukishima gapes but nothing comes out. He slides his glasses off and sets it off to the side delicately.
"Tsukishima, I really do like you a lot."
"Then, let me see it in your eyes." He scoots closer to you and your knees bump. His eyes contain so many emotions: doubt, confusion, even hope, and the slightest bit of lust sparkles within his pupils.
Impulsiveness mask your senses, but you still ask with a shy undertone. "Can I see it in your hands?" You outstretch your arms to match his fingers to yours. His hands are so large and the ends of your fingers reach the last notch of his knuckle. "I like your hands," you blurt out. Your face scrunches in the center from your embarrassment, but you still lace your fingers through the gaps nevertheless. This act is a refuge from real life, yet you know this isn't a dream because you can hear Oba-san yelling that it's time for dinner.
Tsukishima reluctantly pushes himself off the ground and offers a hand to you. To your surprise, he intertwines your fingers together while you stand side by side and again his eyes are on you. This time, you actually look back. "I like this," He adds softly before he pulls back. "Later."
Later can't come soon enough.

12pm, Saturday, Shinjuku Station
This was also posted on ao3 here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/21695521
"Tomorrow!" Rengoku all but shouts by way of greeting. You turn to him, trying to look less shocked than you felt. Around you, the milling students show signs at having jolted at the history teacher's boisterous voice.
The late afternoon light streaming in through the corridor window bathes Rengoku in a deep gold that only strives to make him look even larger than life. The man himself was wearing his signature manic grin, sonic eyes focused on you.
He looked oddly out of place in the quiet school corridor, too vibrant for the tired air of students dragging their feet home from supplementary classes.
Before you are given the chance to answer, he continues. "Meet me at Shinjuku station! At 12pm! See you there!" Apparently having said his piece, he strides off past you, neither waiting for your response, nor looking back even once.
You watch him power walk away, stopping only to greet the students who call out to him as he goes.
What.
After standing there for long enough for your shocked brain to catch up with the rest of your limbs, you headed down the hallway after Rengoku. Upon reaching the staff room, you learn from a suspiciously animated Uzui that the man had already gone home. Resigning yourself to what seemed to be the inevitable push of Rengoku-induced fate, you gathered up your own things and headed home.
Perhaps this was normal Rengoku behaviour. You had absolutely no yard stick to compare him to, considering you have never met anyone like him before. For a moment, you considered not going.
But then again, you didn't have anything to do tomorrow in any case.
And then again, you didn't have his number so it not like you could have called him to cancel.
Tomorrow brought with it the blinding sun of noontime, and Rengoku Kyoujurou's equally blinding grin, easily recognisable even in the crowded rush of Shinjuku station commuters. Wrapped up in a large, conspicuous red coat,  the starched collar of a dress shirt peaks through the neckline. Spotting you immediately as you emerge through the gantry, he strides towards you on glossy oxfords. You feel, all at once, significantly under dressed.
"You look great!" Rengoku booms at you once he considered you significantly within earshot. You were in jeans and sneakers, but you appreciated the polite sentiment anyway.
It was only when you were leaving the house an hour ago that you realised that you had no idea what Rengoku even needed you on a weekend for. You had no idea what to wear, so you had just been hoping it was perhaps a relaxed faculty lunch or an extra tutoring session for any stray failing students, and decided that what you had on would do. Now though, you weren't so sure.
You attempted to glance past him, but Rengoku's wide shoulders and even wider smile seemed to block everyone else from sight.
"You look nice as well," you say, gesturing to his prim ensemble. Rengoku smiles, if possible, even wider. "Thank you! Lets be off!" Turning sharply on his heel, he walks off into the crowd, leaving you to hurry after him, just as before, not once turning back at you.
"Where are the rest?" you ask, finally managing to elbow your way through the crowd to his side as he paused at a stoplight.
Rengoku turns to look down at you, tilting his head unlike a puppy. If, puppies could look so strangely intimidating.
"What rest? It's just us today!"
You blink at him as he begins to walk again, long legs carrying him farther and farther from you as you continued to hurry along. As you got closer, you realised he was talking, and had likely been talking for a while now.
"-And so I think it will be best if we hurry, as then we will be able to see all the fish, AND the penguin show!"
Fish? Penguin show? Hesitantly you asked again, "Rengoku-san... Where are we going?"
"The aquarium! Of course!"
Of course.
Rengoku Kyoujirou tells no lies, and certainly not enough base info, because you soon find yourself within the comforting dim lights of the aquarium's lobby, staring at the whale diorama hanging from the ceiling.
Why on earth did he drag you to the aquarium out of all places? You taught literature for heaven's sakes. Was he going to practice a lecture on the history of Japan's rising sea levels on you?
You heard that the school was planning a learning journey for the students soon, perhaps this was just the recce trip. You didn't find yourself much a fan of fish of any size or shape, thinking the expanse of water a bit overwhelming, and the traumatic memory of watching Jaws when you were only 7 leaving you with mild apprehension for live sea life in any proximity to you.
You said nothing of this to Rengoku, who seemed enthralled at the idea of staring at deep sea eels through twenty meter thick walls of glass, informing you (against your will) about nearly each and every specimen of creature housed in the aquarium. He was so pumped, he waived away your concern of paying him back for your ticket, with a laugh so booming you were sure he startled away a few fish (and some concerned parents).
At exactly 1:50pm, Rengoku straightened from where he had crouched down over the starfish tank, yelling mostly in the direction of the water about the creature's unique ability to regrow limbs "just like a demon!" (you never heard of mythical demons growing back limbs but thought it better than to ask).
"Let's go! The penguin show will start soon!"
The two of you managed to secure a good spot before the crowd started streaming in, thanks to Rengoku's timely actions. The penguins turned out to be absolutely adorable, easily bumping them up to the most enjoyable part of your trip.
Rengoku was unexpectedly quiet as you rambled on, happily recounting to him your favourite parts of the show, as you two followed the crowd out, with just enough timely grunts of approval to let you know he was listening.
As your excitement over the penguins died down, the two of you lapsed into a contemplative silence. You, wondering if its feasible to teach your pet crow similar tricks to the penguins, and him, wondering about whatever it is Rengoku thinks about.
Probably more fish facts.
The silence is broken far too quickly, with him declaring that the two of you should go get lunch. Agreeing readily enough, Rengoku leads you straight out of the aquarium, to your surprise. You had expected him to want to grab something quick at the aquarium's cafe.
Instead, he leads you to a quaint looking restaurant, still bustling with activity despite the late hour for lunch. The restaurant seemed to be populated with couples and groups of fashionable teenage girls, who fit in nicely with the flowery, delicate decor.
Rengoku sits ramrod straight in his ornate chair, ostentatious with his wild hair, red coat (still fully buttoned up), and shiny shoes, yet strangely he did not seem at odds with the gentle atmosphere of the restaurant.
"Do you come here often?" you ask, curious after listening to him recite a practiced order to the waiter.
"No! This is my first time here!" he beams at you.
"You seem familiar with the menu."
"I researched it! I heard this restaurant was popular with young women! I thought you might like it!"
You blink at him, surprised. You were touched at the gesture, and told him as much.
To your continued surprise, Rengoku does not throw you his signature shouted 'thank you!', but instead by way of response, gives you a pleased, serene, closed eye smile, that looked absolutely radiant on his handsome face. Compared to all his wild smiles before, this tugs at your heartstrings in a way that fills your cheeks with an embarrassing blush.
That moment of peace can only last so long. As the waiter returned with your individual meals, so did Rengoku's overwhelming enthusiasm.
"Delicious!" He exclaims, at full volume, completely ignorant of the scandalised stares the other patrons send him.
You hid your amused smile behind your spoon as you ate, trying to ignore the stares as well as he did. The food really was delicious.
Rengoku once again, waves away your attempts to pay, with the compromise that you can pay for the movie later.
Wait. Movie?
And so you went, to an afternoon screening of a newly released horror movie that Rengoku apparently, had booked seats for before. Was he planning to bring the students to the movie as part of the learning journey? You weren't even sure the kids were old enough to see it. Perhaps he's just a horror movie fanatic and wanted someone to watch the show with.
Not wanting to seem like a spoilsport but also not particularly enjoying movies like these, you went along with it quietly, paying for the tickets and buying a large bucket of popcorn for the both of you to share.
You both spend the movie sandwiched on either side between people in the packed theater. Rengoku watched the movie with studious intensity, while you stared at his profile, the popcorn, and the screen (between your fingers). Every so often Rengoku would lean in close to ask you if you were scared, and if you were doing okay, and if you needed him to explain a part of the plot you were studiously ignoring. He was using what he possibly supposes to be a whisper, although it could barely pass for a usual person's speaking volume, and was regularly and aggressively shushed by the people seating close by them.
Worried he wouldn't be able to hear your response from the screams of the actors on screen, you just shook your head or nodded in time to his questions, resorting to patting his arm to reassure him of your comfort, preferring not to reveal to him how scared you were of the movie.
Somehow you had expected to hate the movie more than you actually did. You actually spent most of it amused by Rengoku's undeterred 'whispers' and the subsequent low voiced shushes by the rest of the agitated audience. It certainly shaved off a lot of the possible tension. He also managed to get the plot of the movie completely skewed in the moments he attempted to recount it to you, and it only served to make the situation more amusing.
Rengoku offered to treat you to dessert in return for the movie, seeming to conveniently forget the entire point of you paying for the movie in the first place. At this point, you have gotten used to his steamroller personality and let him drag you to his dessert stall of choice.
Seated at a brightly lit shaved ice cafe, you watch as Rengoku carries over what looked like half the store's entire stock of shaved ice, piled high in a bowl that required both his hands to carry. The myriad of fruits and assorted cookies glittered adorning the dessert wriggled precariously as he sets it down in front of you. You had to lean to your side to even see Rengoku past the towering ice monstrosity.
Handing you a spoon, the man himself grins, manic, turning his gaze to his latest conquest.
"Lets dig in!"
You weren't even sure where all the food went.
Rengoku had just eaten a huge lunch at the restaurant not two hours ago, polished off most of the popcorn you bought (before the commercials even ended), and now was pretty much single handedly finishing off the giant bowl of shaved ice.
You had tapped out long ago, only managing to chew your way through less than a quarter of the thing, barely even making much of a dent in the now overflowing fruits and cookies. Even now, you couldnt rid yourself of the cloying sweet taste of the treats from your mouth.
Rengoku was undeterred by your lack of enthusiasm, shoveling large quantities of ice and fruit into his mouth in between exclamations of its deliciousness. You watched him in a mixture of awe and amusement at his battle with the dessert. You were actually a bit shocked that they sold an item so big at this store.
"Please! Have some more!" Rengoku implores you, speaking around the mixture of melting ice and syrup in his mouth.
You shake your head sheepishly in response. "That's alright, I'm already quite full."
Rengoku pauses his spoon for a second, considering you seriously, and the intensity of his gaze makes you squirm. Before you can say anything to fill the sudden silence, he gives an affirmative "HM!" and continues speed eating before the ice fully melts.
You two pass the rest of the time in silence, save for Rengoku's loud chewing. For you, this is normal. For him, it seems, not so much. You fret silently in your seat, wondering if you've offended him somehow. He did intend to treat you. Perhaps he felt annoyed that you didn't seem to appreciate the dessert?
The silence continued as the two of you walk out of the cafe, broken only by Rengoku telling you that since it's getting rather dark, he would walk you home.  Touched by the gentlemanly gesture and horrified at this new, quiet Rengoku, you give him an uncharacteristically cheerful agreement, and get a sharp nod in return.
You avoid looking at your phone on the train ride back, unwilling to offend him further, even though you could feel his intense gaze trained on you. A few times, he opens his mouth, as if to speak, and you turn to him quickly, as if to hear, but he only takes a deep breath and says nothing, mouth shutting with a clack.
Your anxiety was  at an all time high by the time the both of you reached the quiet street that lead up to your apartment block. You wondered how you were going to work together when you had somehow made even your most amicable mad at you. You also wondered if he managed to fulfill... Whatever it is he had set out to do today. In the end you got too caught up to the flow of it to ask, and he never said anything himself.
You turn to him, swinging your hands nervously. "We're here. Thank you for walking me back."
Rengoku shoots you one of his signature smiles, although it seems a bit strained. "No problem!"
You take a step back, intending to leave, and Rengoku follows with a step towards you. Another step back, he takes another step forward.
".... Well... See ya on Monday I guess? Thanks for today."
That seems to jolt him out of his reverie. "Ah! Yes, thank you! I enjoyed today very much!" he exclaims, at full volume, booming even louder in the quiet night.
You can't help but smile in return, feeling that the day's activities have made you rather taken with his idiosyncrasies. Even if you had no idea what the entire point of the outing was, you realised you had a surprising amount of fun. It was the first time you've been to an aquarium in years, and you certainly would never have watched that movie or eaten that dessert on your own accord. It's refreshing.
Rengoku takes another step towards you, and you're now close enough to see the fog of his breath. If you reach out, you can feel the material of his fancy red coat. He opens his mouth as if to say something, and gapes at you for a moment, before swooping down, and scooping you in a gentle hug.
You barely have time to process the warmth of his body around you before he leans back quickly, holding his arms rigid at his side.
"WELL THEN!" Rengoku shouts, shouting somehow even louder than before. "GOODNIGHT!"
Turning on his heel, he makes as if to stride away, but this time you're ready for it. Your arm shoots out, grabbing a fistful of his coat, and he stops immediately, one foot still hanging in the air.
"What- What was that?" you ask, confusion and shock melding together to irritation.
Rengoku turns, slowly, and when he faces you, you can tell that he's blushing all the way to his hairline, face dyed nearly the same shade as his coat. Immediately, he dips into a low bow, ponytail flopping with the movement.
"I'M VERY SORRY!"
You scratch your cheek awkwardly at the display. "It's okay, I'm not mad I'm just... Confused. Do you hug everyone after spending the day with them?"
Still bent at the waist, staring at the floor, Rengoku shouts into the pavement. "NO! I'M SORRY! I WAS SUPPOSED TO GO IN FOR A KISS BUT I... IM NOT STRONG ENOUGH! FORGIVE ME!"
You open your mouth, and close it, and open it again.
Sorry? Did you hear that right? Kiss? Who? You? Him? Kiss you?
Very distantly you hear yourself ask, "Why were you trying to kiss me?"
Rengoku peeks up at you from his bow. "Uzui-san told me that kissing you was the only appropriate way to end a date."
Uzui? Date?
"He..." You began, before switching tactics, knowing that anything involving advice from Uzui was sure to end up a shit storm. "This is a date?"
Rengoku straightens up slowly from his bow peering at you with his closest possible approximation towards nervousness. "Yes, it is!" At your lack of response he continues, "I have never been on a date before, so I asked Uzui-san for help! He seems very knowledgeable on the subject! He suggested I take you to the aquarium as it is a staple for dates! He told me of the restaurant to bring you to! He also suggested the movie!"
Rengoku paused, as if to gauge your reaction, but at your totally shocked to stone state, he continues on himself.
"I thoroughly researched the timings and sea life so I could show you the best of the aquarium while we were there! I also checked out reviews of the restaurant and their menu to make sure there would be items you would like there! I picked out the dessert because it had all of the fruits and cookies that I know you liked!"
"I... I just wanted you to have a good time," he finishes off, voice going uncharacteristically soft.
Now finished with his tirade he looks at you expectantly, eyes as intense as ever. Completely bombarded by the rush of information, you scramble to scrounge up a response.
"Why didn't you tell me it was a date?"
He does his puppy-esque head tilt. "Uzui-san says you would definitely know, as aquariums are a staple for dates!"
You were going to murder Uzui on Monday.
But then again, suddenly everything made sense. Rengoku's overly detailed itinerary for the day, his exceptional dressing, the restaurant, the walk home. You felt like an idiot for not noticing sooner.
Never in your wildest dreams would you thought Rengoku to have feelings for you. You had expected him to only see you as a fellow colleague, one who had joined the academy at the same time and were at most, buddies for that reason alone. Sure, he always tries to make time to talk to you at work, but you just chalked that up to how he is with everyone. Hell, you never even really thought you were in his league, fully aware of how popular he was with the student body and fellow teachers.
You bury your face in your hands, trying not to groan out loud at your own obliviousness. In front of you Rengoku shifts his weight from one foot to the other, obviously getting antsy with your silence.
"I understand if you don't feel similarly," he begins in a voice too level to belong to himself, "I respect your feelings fully and am sincerly sorry if I have crossed any boundaries. Do not worry at work I-"
"NO!" you yell, cutting him off nearly throwing yourself forward to grab him in your haste.  "I-I'm happy, you told me this!"
Rengoku stares down at you shocked by your loud response, face twitching as if he doesn't know whether to smile or not.
Awkwardly, you step forward, gently wrapping your arms around him, holding them there loosely until you feel him hug you back. You hide your burning cheeks in the folds of his coat, and the two of you stand in that dim street, hugging for what feels like a lifetime.
Finally Rengoku breaks the silence. "So, does this mean the date was a success?"
"Yep," you smile into his coat, your voice coming out muffled by the fabric, but you're pretty sure he heard you anyway.
"Then, can we go on another one again soon?"
You nodded, pulling away from him to face him. He's wearing that heart throbbing serene smile of his, and you cant help but smile in return.
"Of course! Just... ask me for advice next time okay? Not Uzui."

Her | Pt. 2 (Nick Mara)
Nick’s POV:
As I opened the door, I saw Y/N pulling out of the driveway. “Wait!” I screamed and ran towards the gate in nothing but sweats. I saw her car go even faster down the street. “Fuck!” I screamed and slammed on the gate.
Dogs began barking and I ran inside the house looking for my phone. “Fuck! Where is it?!” I screamed at the couch. As I began flipping cushions over, Ed came out yawning.
“What’re you looking for?” He asked. “I need my phone. And i was so drunk last night that i don’t remember where i put it, or what I said to make Y/n livid.” I laid down on the floor searching under the couch.
“Wait what?” Ed said scratching his head. Dude just help me find my phone and i’ll explain while i text y/n” I ran to my room with Ed following. Ed grabbed the pair of jeans that were neatly folded on my console desk. My phone fell out from the folding along with my wallet and keys.
“Oh thank god.” I snatched up my phone and sat down. Ed sat on the edge of my bed waiting for an explanation of what happened. I texted y/n quickly asking if we can talk. when she didn’t answer, i figured she’s still driving. i type a quick “just lmk when you’re home safe” I put my phone away and see Ed staring at me.
“she asked- well stated that i said that i’m still in love with Alexys. I fucked up and said we were together for a while. Like she can’t blame me. right?” I asked while biting my nails. A habit I knew y/n hated.
“I hate to tell you this, but you’re fucked. Her asking was your chance to possibly save yourself depending on what route Y/n was taking.” Ed said and stood up. “Listen. Y/n’s chill. Just give her a little bit of time. Don’t force her to talk yet. Too many emotions are present right now..” Ed walked out of the room. I sat there with my phone waiting for a response from her.
Y/N’s POV:
I got home in less than 20 minutes. Usually it’s a good 40 minutes to get to my house, but i didn’t feel like being outside anymore. As soon as you saw the texts from Nick, you decide to shut your phone off for the day. You didn’t want to communicate with anyone right now.
After a binging session on Netflix, you get bored of it. You look outside and realize the sun is already about to set. You open your drawer next to your bed and pull out your bong and your bag of weed. You open your balcony door and sit in your hanging chair. You set everything up and see the sun is going down. You turned your phone on for the first time all day. A bunch of notifications popped up but you ignored it and played your music. After each hit, you immediately feel all emotion leave your body.
Nick on the other hand was a mess. Ed has warned everyone what happened. Zion tried making him play basketball, but he refused to get out of bed. Brandon needed him in the home studio for a song he was working on. Usually Nick would do it no questions asked, but he didn’t even answer the door for Brandon. Austin offered to cook for him. He didn’t even feel an ounce of hunger.
Nick would go in and out of sleep. When he was awake, he was just staring at his phone waiting for some sort of response or update from you. He knew he didn’t even deserve that considering he broke your heart; not the other way around.
Nick shot up as he got a notification you posted on your snapchat story. He opened it immediately and saw that you were home, smoking. Nick felt a sudden burst of confidence and swiped up. “So you can post but not answer my texts?” He sent it without re-thinking what he was saying.
You weren’t surprised when you saw Nick had messaged you seconds after you posted. You swiped to see what he said, but not all the way so he doesn’t know you read it.
You wanted to laugh. You couldn’t believe what you were reading. “This kid has the audacity to even give me the slightest bit of attitude.” You thought to yourself.
You weren’t going to ruin your high with his bullshit. You were of course sad because you love the kid. But you’re so close to losing it at the same time. You block him on everything. He had no chance of reaching you.
2 weeks later
The first couple days after the breakup, Nick moped around the house. He’s now just getting back into the studio and dancing again. Only Brandon and Nick went to the studio as everyone else recorded their parts.
Zion had texted you saying Nick shouldn’t be home for the day and you can pick up your stuff. As Brandon was playing the soundtrack back for Nick to hear, he got caught up in his phone. Zion was texting Brandon updates and how long they have to keep Nick in the studio.
Nick notices Brandon’s typing a lot and tries to get his attention. Brandon snapped out of his trance and tries to avoid Nick’s glare. “What’s got you so worked up?” Nick said pausing the music.
“Don’t get mad. Um.. Y/n’s at the house getting all her stuff..” Nick’s eyes bugged out. “SHES WHAT?! I need to go. I need to talk to her.” Nick began running around gathering his stuff. “Nick i don’t think that’s a good idea. I-“ “Brandon please. I never even got the chance to even try and apologize. I just need to talk to her” Nick was about to run out the door.
“She doesn’t want to see you!” Brandon yelled before Nick fully got out the door. Nick turned and saw Brandon now standing up. “She told us. She is really done, she’s moving back up near her mom in San Francisco” Brandon said not daring to look at Nick, who must be livid.
“And you guys hid that from me?! Whatever. Just I at least need to try. Because if I don’t, then.. then I’ll probably hate myself more than she already does.” Nick ran out and conveniently there was a cab out front.
Nick jumped in and told the guy the address to the house. Before the driver drove off, the door opened again. “Sorry man. I got you on the extra tip.” Brandon said settling in. “Dude why are you here” Nick said. “Well, i’m not gonna leave you alone. and you left your wallet in the studio.” Brandon handed him the wallet and they both stared out the window.
You were in Nick’s room searching for anything that was yours. You had a box full of his stuff and just left it in front of the closet. Zion sat in Nick’s chair and watched as you packed everything.
“So this is it? We’re never gonna see you again?” You laughed. “I’ll come back soon. Just I can’t be in the same vicinity right now.” You saw your necklace on the dresser in the same spot you left it. You sighed. “I think that’s it.” You looked away and gathered whatever you had.
Zion walked you to the door. Ed and Austin were standing at the door as well. “We’ll miss you.” Austin said hugging you. “You guys aren’t gonna make this easy huh.” “Nope” Ed said hugging you. “Bye guys. Thanks for this, again” Zion opened the door for you and you saw a cab pull in behind your car.
“Seriously!” You yelled before seeing the back door open. Nick’s head popped out. The car was close enough so you could hear what he said to the driver.
“Just keep it running, and do not move. You move, she leaves alright?” The guy shrugged and put the car in park.
At this point you’re at your car and everyone’s outside. The boys are standing at the door and Brandon is by the cab.
“Just give me a chance to talk. I mean you have to now, you have no way out.” You rolled your eyes. “I can easily just drive through your fence if I please” You smile and go to put your stuff in your trunk. Nick stops you from moving.
“You can, but you want to listen. If you didn’t, i know you’d be through the fence already.” Nick said and he was right. “You have 5 minutes.”
“Fine. You gotta believe me, I know i fucked up and i am so so sorry. I am in love with you. I literally can’t live without you. You can ask all of them. Today was my first good day in weeks.” You looked over at the guys and they all nodded. “And why ‘was’ it your first good day. It’s only 3 in the afternoon.” You crossed your arms.
“Because there’s a chance today might be the day i lose you completely.” You finally looked into his eyes to see if there was any sense of a lie. You don’t think you’ve ever seen his eyes so gentle and hopeful.
“Just one more shot. And if i ever fuck up again, which will probably be never, I’ll let you go as you wish.” He was practically begging. You sighed. You nodded.
“A nod? What does that mean? What does that-“ Nick said slowly freaking out. “You got your shot” You pout jokingly. Nick picked you up and spun you around. The guys started cheering around you. “Oh stop. But i’m still moving. If you really want to see me, you’ll drive” You laugh.
“Baby, I’d walk to SanFran if i want to see you.” You shook your head and hugged him. He kissed your head and rested his chin on your head. You came back to your senses after all the butterflies had settled. You punched Nick in the gut and he fell to the floor.
“That’s for breaking me. But we’re even now” You laugh as you help him up. “Fair enough.” Nick paid the guy and he drove off right away probably annoyed Nick wasted his time. He wasn’t wrong though, if there was no car in the way, you would’ve left.
“Thank you y/n. I’ll spend the rest of my life making this up to you.” Nick whispered so that only you could hear. You were skeptical, but happy to have him back in your arms.
